"All Californians benefit when their freshwater ecosystems—meadows, streams, lakes, rivers, floodplains, wetlands, marshlands, estuaries—are healthy enough to support multiple human uses as well as biodiversity." Primary forests cover approximately 1.11 billion hectares globally and are vital for sustaining terrestrial biodiversity, with at least two-thirds of the world's biodiversity depending on these ecosystems. There is a need for strategic communication and capacity development to enhance the visibility and inclusion of primary forests in conservation and financing strategies. Against this backdrop, CIFOR-ICRAF joined the 19th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF19), where global environmental and development organizations convened to address the urgent need to strengthen the conservation of primary forests worldwide. During the event, Robert Nasi, CIFOR-ICRAF COO, highlighted the urgent need for policy coherence on forest conservation. "You cannot conserve primary forests in a vacuum. They are part of a global landscape, and what happens in the landscape will influence what happens in the primary forest." To preserve them, we must strengthen partnerships, expand financing pathways, raise the visibility of these ecosystems, and push for international policy coherence. As cities expand and lifestyles shift, there’s a persistent need for new strategies to keep the balance sheet of conservation “in the green.” That need applies to how we carry out our work, but also how we fund it from the outset. DUC and our partners continually look ahead to fund the pressing requirements of conservation. Like single-species, multi-species and habitat-based outlooks, the biodiversity lens can also tap public and private-sector commitments that mirror our mission. -- From the new edition of DUC's Conservator

Conservation Imperatives Protecting all areas of remaining natural habitat is important to help mitigate the biodiversity and climate crises impacting the world, along with ongoing efforts to connect natural landscapes and restore degraded land. However, not all areas are equal in their contribution for preventing extinctions of species and a recent study, which I am proud that the World Land Trust has contributed to, highlights that just 1.22% of the Earth's terrestrial surface needs to properly protected to prevent the most likely imminent extinctions and preserve the world's irreplaceable biodiversity. These Conservation Imperative areas are sites containing rare and threatened species, or species with a narrow range, that are not within national parks, community reserves, or other types of protected areas, and whose protection should be prioritised in global efforts to reach a “30x30” target to protect at least 30% of the Earth’s surface by 2030. #worldlandtrust The paper has been published in the journal Frontiers in Science (https://lnkd.in/d-75s3Fp).

Research emphasises the necessity of protecting the last frontiers of biodiversity: conservation imperatives! Recent research by Dinerstein et al. highlights the urgent need to protect 16,825 critical unprotected sites that harbour rare and threatened species. These Conservation Imperatives cover just 1.22% of the Earth's land but are vital for preventing imminent extinctions and sustaining global biodiversity goals. Key points from the study: 🔸Strategic Focus: Protecting these sites could significantly reduce extinction risks, especially in tropical regions. 🔸Cost Efficiency: Protection would require around $169 billion over 5 years—an affordable investment for global biodiversity. 🔸Measurable Impact: Targeting these areas could be the anchor points to meet the 30x30 conservation goal by 2030. 🔸Community Rights: Emphasizing collaboration with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) is critical for sustainable conservation. 🔸 Practical Approaches: From land purchases to community reserves, diverse strategies are suggested to secure these vital habitats efficiently. At Conserve Global, we believe in science-based strategies that prioritise both ecological significance and community stewardship. Our initiatives echo this study's call to safeguard irreplaceable biodiversity while empowering local communities to lead the charge through sustainable practices and respecting traditional knowledge. #ConserveGlobal #Biodiversity #ConservationImperatives #ProtectNature #IndigenousRights #TenureRights #30x30 #ConservationGoals #CommunityStewardship #GlobalConservation 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gRQfhBEH

A draft government environmental management plan has been welcomed as steps in the right direction, but viewed with some scepticism for its shortfalls. Will our biodiversity strategy evolve into a holistic blueprint that safeguards nature while also uplifting communities, or will it falter, leaving biodiversity and livelihoods in jeopardy?

To meet the GBF’s 30x30 target, conservation areas need to be large enough to encompass functioning ecosystems and their associated biodiversity, and located in areas of high ecological integrity https://lnkd.in/e2Skrd_s
