The implementation of small-scale irrigated #forage production is a relatively simple and rapidly emerging opportunity in #smallholder mixed crop-#livestock production systems in the tropics. Here we show that, by using a combination of climate-based scheduling together with a solar water pump for irrigation, we increased the dry matter yield (DMY) of Napier grass (Zehone-02 (#ILRI accession 16791)) by 36% compared to applying the same scheduling using a pulley, and by 40 and 100%, respectively, compared to farmer scheduling using a solar water pump and using a pulley. Using solar water pumps not only enhanced DMY and irrigation water use efficiency, but they also significantly increased irrigation labour productivity compared to the pulley system. In this preprint we conclude that appropriate irrigation management with efficient water lifting can increase forage productivity and improve the livelihoods of farming households. "Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will invest $400 million in at least 18 irrigation districts to help farmers continue commodity production while conserving water across the West. This funding — which will support irrigation districts and producers in using innovative water-saving technologies and farming practices while producing water-saving commodities in the face of continued drought — is expected to conserve up to 50,000 acre-feet in water use across 250,000 acres of irrigated land in production while expanding and creating new, sustainable market opportunities.
