Music by living composers is more prevalent in our concert halls than ever before, and this increase is largely led by women composers, more of whom appear in the top 100 most-performed than at any time in the last decade. This is the main headline from our Classical Music Statistics 2023, just announced today. Each year we take a look through the events listed on our website – over 31,000 in 2023 – crunch the numbers and draw conclusions based on what we see. Am I the only one who has observed that, for some time now, most Ghanaian conductors of musical ensembles (choirs, orchestras, and bands) tend to focus more on specific sections or instruments, potentially neglecting other essential aspects of the performance? Most often, their focus is either on the lead instrument/voice or their instrumental/vocal part, leaving the other sections to their discretion on basic, yet crucial elements like expression, dynamics, and even cues. Even some entrances catch them off guard, indicating a lack of complete control over the music. I believe balancing attention across the entire ensemble is vital for a cohesive and well-rounded performance. Effective communication, in-depth score study, ample rehearsal sessions with the ensembles, and continuous improvement of conducting techniques through refresher courses, among other important factors, are excellent ways to address this issue and bring out the best in all sections.
