Recently I was lucky enough to be asked to introduce Nuke From Orbit at Web Summit. I was on one of the 'minor' stages, which from my experiences with Kobas meant about 10-25 people. I was bang wrong, 200 chairs and people sitting on the floor, standing outside the area too- quite the group. A better name for "pilot" in this context is perhaps "proof of value". Also I would say the x-axis represents "Realization" and the y-axis "Value". That is an interesting post by Alberto Onetti. Thanks for sharing! I don't think of these terms as part of a continuum. I prefer to call everything a "prototype" and then specify what you are trying to test with that prototype (desirability, feasibility, viability). An early prototype that tests for technical feasibility is a "proof of concept." A pilot (in B2B) is when you deploy your prototype at a customer site to test if you can deliver on your value proposition. So POC and Pilot are "activities" where you put your prototype to the test for a specific outcome. Also, I suggest eliminating MVP from our innovation lingo. It causes too much confusion since nobody can define it in concrete terms. 🙂 When working on a new product, creating a shared language between your stakeholders on the outcome you are trying to produce is critical. Standardizing on the term "prototype" and then focusing on the outcome you want to produce will create more alignment and support from your peers.
