Huge news to finish 2023 with! Berkeley Red - VIP Events & F1 has just been named in the “Three Villages News” as 47th best small business in Bagshot! This puts us in some rare company. Along with the likes of Bagshot Kebab & Grill and ‘Big Dave the Handyman’ from the Kings Arms pub. I left a steady 6 figure salary, sold the Porsche sports car and ditched the luxury holidays on the French Riviera to start this business. Just before the covid hit! A lot can happen in 5 years! But do I regret it? EVERY. SINGLE. To overbook or not overbook, that is the question. Understanding the return and risk is critical in answering that question. As a revenue manager, overbooking and getting it right was one of the best wins I had. Overbooking and getting it wrong created volatility between marketing teams, operations, other admin departments, and of course the guest. Without like-for-like accommodations available nearby, overbooking can be a dangerous habit. In today’s environment where everyone is connected to social media, the cost of getting this wrong is even higher. Is overbooking still worth the reputational risk and the volatility it can cause in an organizations culture?

One the aspects I have always liked about the FTR Transportation Conference, which I have missed just once since 2010, is that it is chock-full of content and doesn't dedicate big blocks of time to a vendor exhibition – a rarity for industry events. Still, the conference has plenty of time for networking, including ample breaks during the day, social events each night (more on that tomorrow), and one of my favorite traditions, which is the Indy Canal Walk/Run. For early-ish risers (it used to be even earlier in the morning), the walk-run is a great way to combine networking with exercise. It's a win-win. And it's as taxing on your body and heart as you want it to be. Runners can run, and walkers can walk. If you prefer to stroll, that's fine, too. Many feared his early exit, but he managed to finish within the time limit alongside his team members.
