As we celebrate the Pride season this summer, I feel compelled to share a part of my identity. I am queer, and I am proud. 🏳️🌈 In Alberta, we’ve seen a troubling rise in hate towards the 2SLGBTQ+ community. It’s disheartening but has also reinforced the importance of visibility and representation. I am out of LinkedIn and Rogers Communications, for those who feel unseen and unheard. I believe that our workplace environments should be sanctuaries of inclusivity and respect, where everyone can be their authentic selves without fear. This Pride season let’s stand together against hate and celebrate the beautiful diversity of our community. To all my 2SLGBTQ+ friends and allies in Alberta and beyond, know that you are not alone. Let’s continue supporting each other, not just during Pride, but daily. 🌈 Call to Action: I encourage each of you to take a moment to reflect on how you can contribute to a more inclusive world. Whether through education, advocacy, or simply offering a listening ear, our actions matter. If you’re looking for ways to get involved, consider supporting local 2SLGBTQ+ organizations and participating in Pride events. Visibility Matters. I hope that one day I don’t have to talk about being queer. A day when I am just known as Jay. ❤️Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) - a day dedicated to raising the awareness and calling out the discrimination and violence that is still plaguing the entire LGBTQ+ community globally. 🧡IDAHOBIT traces its roots back to 17 May 1990, when the World Health Organization (WHO) declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. 💛While progress has been made, there are still 62 United Nations member states that criminalise consensual same-sex relations, and at least 59 countries have restrictions on freedom of expression related to sexual and gender diversity issues. 💚The past two years have seen an increase in anti-trans legislation and further vilification of the trans community. 💙This year's theme is: "No one left behind: equality, freedom and justice for all" — it's a call for unity to creat a world where NO ONE is left behind. 💜How will you recognise and activate this year's IDAHOBIT mission? #IDAHOBIT #IDAHOBIT2024 #LGBTQrights

Human Rights' belong to all of us, regardless of our differences. Each person deserves to live freely and pursue happiness however they choose. Though the path is long, together we move closer to a world where compassion and dignity are universal. Prejudice and injustice persist in many forms. By educating ourselves on diverse experiences, and advocating for change both large and small, progress continues one understanding at a time. Our shared humanity far outweighs any factors that might divide us. What gives you hope for a future with equal rights and opportunities for all? How can we use our individual platforms and privileges to support those without a voice? A just world is within our reach when we extend empathy across borders, both literal and those drawn in our own minds. Let this be a day to reflect on how far we've come, and how each small act of goodwill moves us closer to the dream of freedom for every soul. 🌈 Pride Allyship: Fostering Inclusion and Support 🌈 As we celebrate Pride Month this June, let’s recognise the vital role allies play in supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. Effective allyship goes beyond mere labels; it’s about meaningful actions. Here are three key components to be a good ally: Acceptance: Embrace diversity. Accept individuals for who they are, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Show empathy and understanding. Humility: Recognise that you don’t know everything. Be open to learning and unlearning. Listen to LGBTQIA+ voices and experiences without assuming you have all the answers. Action: Advocate actively. Speak out against discrimination, support others in sharing their stories, and educate yourself about the invisible barriers faced by your LGBTQIA+ peers. But remember, true allyship extends beyond public spaces. It’s about standing up for the community even when they’re not in the room. Diversity means a lot when it touches you personally. It doesn't strictly mean that you need to be one to know one... Without entering into personal details, I have seen many individuals reaching out their true potential and being fully recognised once they felt welcomed and accepted. Diversity is about creating an environment where everyone feels respected and valued for who they are, regardless of their background, identity, or experiences. When people feel safe and supported, they are more likely to reach their full potential and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways.
