It's National Public Health Week! This year's theme — "Protecting, Connecting and Thriving: We Are All Public Health" — reflects that the future of #publichealth hinges on our ability to bridge systems thinking, cross-sector collaboration, and community engagement to address the challenges facing our communities. Our Resilience Catalysts (RC) in Public Health initiative is working with local health departments across the country to do just that, helping strengthen their capacity to identify and address the root causes and structural drivers of inequity, including structural racism. Download our recently published evaluation report and infographic to learn more about the RC process and lessons learned: https://lnkd.in/ehfKdJFB #NPHW

Racism is widely recognized as a root cause for most health inequities. For the first time the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has declared racism as an overarching health crisis in Illinois and is now one of the five priorities included in the draft State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP). According to the draft SHIP, “It is essential to emphasize that disparities in health outcomes according to race/ethnicity have nothing to do with biology and everything to do with inequitable distributions of money, power and resources.” Racism and four other data-driven priorities in the report were established after two years of data assessment and planning with collaborators including the Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI) Institute, Policy, Practice and Prevention Research Center (P3RC), and other public health advocates and organizations. As we end #NationalPublicHealthWeek, we’re contemplating what the future of public health looks like. The future of public health is all about partnering with different sectors and communities who are at the heart of decision-making. The future of public health is all about partnering with communities who are at the heart of decision-making. The future of public health is one rooted in racial justice and health equity. We partnered with the Big Cities Health Coalition to explore strategies that root public health’s practice in racial justice and health equity. In “Centering Racial Justice to Strengthen the Public Health Ecosystem: Lessons from COVID-19,” we challenge the public health field to commit to an ecosystem approach to public health. As we bid farewell to March and welcome April, I want to bring attention to an important observance: #NationalMinorityHealthMonth. This month serves as a reminder of the critical need to address health disparities and inequities faced by minority communities. In the midst of this awareness month, let's recognize the unique health challenges and barriers that minority populations encounter. From access to quality healthcare services to socio-economic factors influencing health outcomes, there are numerous systemic issues that demand our attention and action. During National Minority Health Month, let's commit to fostering inclusive healthcare environments, advocating for equitable access to resources, and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. Here's to a month of reflection, advocacy, and collective action toward health equity. https://lnkd.in/dzTDWWid #minorityhealth

As National Minority Health Month draws to a close, it's important to reflect on the significant challenges and strides made in addressing health disparities, particularly those exacerbated by staffing shortages in healthcare within minority communities. At A Traveled Path Homes, we are dedicated to resolving housing challenges for traveling medical professionals, which is a critical step towards reducing these disparities and enhancing health equity. Staffing shortages in healthcare facilities often hit minority communities the hardest, where the lack of adequate medical personnel can hinder access to necessary care. This situation is compounded when medical professionals face housing issues, making it difficult for them to remain in or relocate to these high-need areas. By ensuring these professionals have stable and affordable housing, A Traveled Path Homes helps maintain a consistent presence of skilled caregivers in communities that need them the most. Our mission this month, and every month, is not just to acknowledge the problems but to actively work towards creating sustainable solutions that promote health equity. By focusing on the housing needs of traveling medical professionals, we aim to directly impact the health outcomes in underserved communities, ensuring all individuals have access to quality healthcare, regardless of their zip code.
April is National Minority Health Month! At HHS, we're committed to bridging gaps in health care access and quality of services for underserved communities. Together, we can improve health outcomes for all minority communities across America. #MinorityHealthMonth #HealthEquity
