As National Apprenticeship Week kicks off we hear from Jonathan Foot, Head of Apprenticeships and Early Careers on the importance of investing in skills. "I believe our industry is an exciting place where successful careers can be forged. We are in the unique position of being a barrierless industry, which means people often need little or no qualifications to join. We can offer on the job training and development and we have so many fantastic examples of individuals that have worked their way up the ranks and are now in roles such as Exec Chefs, Managing Directors or sustainability leads. As an industry we need to invest in skills. At Compass we do this through our Career Pathways and apprenticeships, which is aligned to Our Social Promise – a commitment to positively impact one million lives by 2030. That’s why I am very proud that we have increased our apprenticeship numbers by almost 60% in two years." As National Apprenticeship Week wraps up, I'm looking back on the past year spent diving into the world of apprenticeships. Starting in this role I had no idea how much I’d get to work on topics of L&D. It has been a positive surprise though, given that continuous learning was actually the topic of my Master’s dissertation!   Working closely with the UK apprenticeships system has been both rewarding and enlightening. The complexity of the system is undeniable, yet there is so much opportunity in this space. Considering the current state of social mobility within the financial services industry it is important we continue working on increasing the numbers of apprentice starts. Apprenticeships offer a way for people from different backgrounds to start meaningful careers, bringing diversity and inclusivity to workplaces. They are also a brilliant way to upskill current staff, as the career stories posted on the Association of British Insurers page this week shows.   Best part about this week has been seeing so many familiar faces at all the events and webinars. Yesterday, I attended the Generation Next Summer Social and Awards and as I heard the nominations, it hit me: the idea that you need to be old to be good at your job is as outdated as dial-up internet. Apprenticeships are proving that talent, skill, and innovation aren't bound by age. Experience used to be measured in years, but now, young professionals are bringing fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table. Apprenticeships give them a structured environment to gain hands-on experience and dive into industries they’re passionate about. The phrase “When you’re good enough, you’re old enough” Ian Morgan OBE FCILT is more relevant than ever. Embracing apprenticeships unlocks the potential of young professionals and builds a dynamic workforce. Age shouldn’t be a barrier to opportunity—young talent, given the chance, can achieve extraordinary things. The Generation Next Summer Social and Awards was a testament to this, showcasing the remarkable achievements of young professionals who are already making a significant impact. Take Cerys Goodson, for example. She was nominated for the Apprentice of the year award. Though she didn’t win, her nomination alone speaks volumes about the incredible contributions young professionals are making. Cerys and her peers are living proof that when you’re good enough, you’re old enough. So let's ditch the age-old notion that you need decades of experience to be valuable and start welcoming the young, talented go-getters into the fold. Trust me, they’ve got it covered!

Apprenticeship routes to employment are valuable to both rhe apprentice and the employer. Employers have to take the blinkers off and look to the wider applicant pool and skills base in their teams. It’s a challenge doing the juggling but an apprentice become a valued employee with in the job skills that can’t be gained via academic study alone.
