The 2023-2024 Broadway season has officially come to an end and the Broadway League has released the stats. The season grossed $1.54 billion, slightly down 2.4% from the previous season, with 12.29 million admissions, almost unchanged from last year. Despite these positive figures, they have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels from the 2018-2019 season, which saw $1.83 billion in gross and 14.77 million attendees. However, theater capacity was high at 89.63%, close to 2018-2019's 89.75% and higher than last season's 88.35%. There were 1,471 playing weeks, slightly fewer than the previous season, but attendance per playing week increased to 8,353 from 8,333. The season saw 39 new productions, including 21 musicals, 16 plays, and 2 specials. #theater #broadway #onstage #boxoffice #tickets https://lnkd.in/ed_i2PKY

Are Broadway shows moving to earlier evening start times? That seems to be a trend as some shows address the post-pandemic decline in audiences, especially from suburban areas. Historically, evening performances started at 8:30 p.m., but have since shifted to 8:00 p.m. More recently, shows have been moving start times to 7:00 or 7:30 p.m. and adding more matinees, catering to families, tourists, and older audiences who prefer earlier shows. Matinees, particularly on Thursday afternoons, have become more popular than Saturday nights. Shows like Disney’s “Aladdin” and “The Lion King” now feature 6:30 p.m. performances on Sundays. Some productions, like “Oh, Mary!,” are opting for two evening performances instead of a matinee. The ongoing adjustments aim to get theaters back to capacity. #theater #broadway #onstage #tickets #boxoffice https://lnkd.in/e3z7Pgyd

We’ve Hit Peak Theater Nobody knows how to succeed on Broadway anymore. The resulting drop in demand has already lasted longer than the dips Broadway saw after 9/11 and the Great Recession. Audiences are down 17 percent since the boom season of 2018–19 with older suburbanites accounting for most of the falloff. “The drop was at 50-plus,” Producing on Broadway, where roughly 80 percent of shows fail to recoup, has always been a leap of faith. Yet Tonys no longer guarantee solvency. It used to be that if a show won Best Musical, it would earn its money back. Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the last winner to open before the pandemic, ultimately reopened and recouped. The next two winners, A Strange Loop and Kimberly Akimbo, failed to break even before closing. That hadn’t happened since 2002. The capitalization of Broadway shows this season adds up to $410 million, compared with $290 million last year, according to Broadway Journal columnist Philip Boroff. Before 2023, only a handful of shows were ever made for more than $20 million. This season, there are at least five, topped by Cabaret, which at $26 million is the most expensive Broadway revival in history. This can’t be pegged purely to inflation. Titanic would have cost $19 million in today’s money In November, Boroff reported that Water for Elephants has weekly operating costs of $960,000; Back to the Future costs $980,000 to run, and Cabaret needs $1.16 million to break even. Before the pandemic, $700,000 was considered to be very high. According to a 2023 Broadway League report, the average age of a theatergoer is now 40.4, the youngest in at least 20 years. https://lnkd.in/ds6a-aeF

This is a massive win for Broadway. This is the first new musical to recoup since the pandemic that wasn't around before the pandemic . . . which means I don't think it got "save our stages" $ to restart. So, how did & Juliet do it? From the outside, I see three reasons. 1) It's not just a great show, it's a great FUN show, which is what audiences want to see. 2) They get a family audience, so the average order is probably closer to 3 than 2. Sure, fun date night, but the teens love it, too. 3) The music. Duh. OH and a bonus . . . which may be the most important. 4) It had a $17mm capitalization. In the sea of capitalizations over $20mm, they kept theirs down. The degree of difficulty for recouping a Broadway show is higher than ever. Super props to the great producing by #MaxMartin, #TimHeadington, #TheresaSteelePage, #JennyPetersson, Martin Dodd, and Eva Price. Let's hope this starts a trend! https://lnkd.in/eSXvfd-2

Congratulations to all the young people who participated in YEAAUK Online Musical Theatre Competition. 🎵 🎶 🎙 Competition can be beneficial for young people in several ways, fostering their development and preparing them for future challenges. Here are some key reasons whilst researching that I discovered: Motivation and Goal Setting: Competition encourages young people to set goals and strive to achieve them. This can help them develop a sense of purpose and direction. Resilience and Coping Skills: Facing and overcoming challenges in a competitive environment helps young people build resilience. They learn to handle both success and failure, developing coping mechanisms that will serve them well in life. Self-Improvement and Skill Development: Competition pushes individuals to improve their skills and knowledge. It encourages continuous learning and self-improvement, which are crucial for personal and professional growth. Work Ethic and Discipline: Preparing for competitions often requires hard work, dedication, and discipline. These qualities are valuable in all areas of life, from academics to future careers. Creativity and Innovation: Competitive environments often stimulate creativity and innovation. Young people learn to think outside the box and develop new solutions to problems in order to stand out. Teamwork and Collaboration: Many competitions, such as team sports or group projects, require collaboration. This helps young people develop teamwork skills, learn to communicate effectively, and understand the importance of working with others toward a common goal. Confidence and Self-Esteem: Success in competition can boost self-confidence and self-esteem. Even in the face of failure, young people can gain confidence from knowing they gave their best effort and can learn from their experiences. Healthy Rivalry and Sportsmanship: Competition teaches young people about healthy rivalry and sportsmanship. They learn to respect their opponents, celebrate others’ successes, and handle losses gracefully. Real-World Preparation: The competitive experiences mirror real-world scenarios where competition is a part of everyday life. Whether in academics, sports, or later in their careers, young people will be better prepared to navigate competitive situations. Social Skills and Networking: Through competitions, young people meet and interact with peers who share similar interests. This helps them build social skills and expand their network, which can be beneficial in personal and professional contexts. Overall, competition can play a significant role in the holistic development of young people, equipping them with essential life skills and attitudes that will benefit them throughout their lives.
Winners announced! Congratulations on your well-deserved victory! May this achievement serve as a reminder of your incredible talent and the limitless potential that lies within you. “It's not about winning or losing a competition, it's about beating the doubt from within yourself and knowing at the end of each day you are one step closer to your goals.” #musicaltheatre #broadway #musical #theatre #musicals #westend #broadwaymusical #theater #theatrekid #music #yeaaukmusicaltheatrecomp
