As an academic advisor, I learn and grow every cycle, developing a more nuanced understanding of admissions over time. I always hope that my graduate and professional school applicants do not have the opportunity to grow by experiencing disappointment the first time around, but rather grow and learn in the next step of higher education. These newsletters are my way of giving first-time applicants and re-applicants the benefit learning from my many years of practice.   This issue of the Doing College and Beyond's Graduate and Professional Admissions Newsletter focuses on the “Why Us” prompt. Tell me your story: What are times your academic/career plans changed drastically, or your timeline was completely rearranged? Here's mine: My original plan: Take the MCAT senior year, apply to medical schools that May, and take a singular gap year. Problem: I went to a high school overseas so I came in with zero credits. I thought I had space for another minor, so I took extra classes. If I had taken the MCAT senior year, I would have needed to overload my class schedule, potentially dropping my GPA. To graduate on time and with good grades, I must wait to take the MCAT. New plan: Take the MCAT after I graduate. However, this means I take two gap years. Initially, it was frustrating to push back my plans by a year. I now realize how valuable this might be to my medical school application. I will have an entire year to get clinical experience, unhindered by college classes. This reminds me of a teacher who once said to their student: If I want their story to look different, "What is that to you? You must follow me." Those are the words of Jesus to his student Peter. They inspire me not to compare my story and path with anyone else's. What is your story? Please share!

The Danish-Norwegian collaboration in postgraduate medical education is prospering🇩🇰🇳🇴🌱 A year after the “First Nordic Conference on Medical Workplace Learning: Bridging Theory, Science, and Practice,” hosted by Professors Edvin Scheu and Pim Teunissen in Norway, Kristijane Cook Hvaal (tidligere Kristijane Cook Bulukin) Kari Kjeldstadli and Anniken Riise Elnes are now leading efforts to cultivate a sustainable educational culture within public hospitals. I have had the honor of providing theoretical guidance throughout this initiative, and today I delivered my third lecture on medical education for senior consultants responsible for postgraduate training. How Friends Fuel Success In Medical School✨️ Navigating medical school is no small feat, and the journey is not just about academic excellence but also about the people who walk it with you. Having friends, both seniors and juniors by my side has been one of the greatest strengths.Just to mention a few… 💪Emotional and Mental Support. Medical school comes with its fair share of challenges, from heavy workloads to personal self-doubt. Knowing that I’m not alone in facing these struggles has been pretty reassuring.At least someone understands what I'm going through. 👌Continuous Motivation to Improve. The beauty of having both seniors and juniors as friends is that they constantly challenge you to be better. Whether it's seniors pushing me to aim higher or juniors asking questions that spark my curiosity, I find myself driven to expand my knowledge and skills daily. ✨️Simplifying Complex Concepts. Friends have a unique way of breaking down difficult concepts into bite-sized, understandable explanations. This peer teaching has saved me countless hours of confusion, allowing me to grasp essential ideas quickly, especially during exam preparation. 🤞Learning from Others' Mistakes. Friends, especially seniors, have been open about their experiences at my level, showing me where they went wrong and helping me avoid similar pitfalls. 👉Collaborative Study and Resource Sharing. Studying in isolation can be draining, but with friends, it becomes a collaborative effort.The efficiency of studying together, while keeping each other accountable,sharing necessary materials has been vital in retaining knowledge and performing well academically. The role my friends have played is impossible to overstate as they’ve made this challenging journey not only bearable but rewarding so far♥️. #medschool #friendsupport #navigatingmedsch

Hey network, 13/3/24- I attended a small lecture given by a former student in my sixth form who is currently in her third year of being a medical student. Getting information from the perspective of an actual student who has been through similar things I will be going through, it was a very informative lecture. I got to know the exact pathway which led her to the position she is in currently. Starting off with her GCSEs, into her Alevels and into University. She also gave very useful advice such as the importance of balancing work life and social life ( while greatly emphasising how important these two years are ), how to write a successful personal statement ( mentioning the fact that your personal statement is unique and it’s what distinguishes you from everyone else who has good grades, also saying how small specific parts of experience from things such as volunteering and work experience should be expanded on and linked to medicine and why the lessons you learnt from that small portion will be valuable, instead of talking about many things, it’s good to expand and build upon a few things), as well to prepare for interviews. Her anecdote was very insightful as she also mentioned how university life is, as well as the pros and cons of doing a medical degree: I really liked the all rounded argument she gave instead of glamorousing the degree she gave a realistic viewpoint of how it actually is, I still think her arguements to back medicine as a great degree outweighs the cons. My main takeaway from her is attaining transferable skills- lessons you attain through experiences which can be applied to medicine in one way or another as this shows the skill of adaptability which is a key trait a doctor must have. Overall I really enjoyed her lecture and it definitely helped me decide whether I want to continue working towards studying medicine- I do :)

They told us :"Just be a doctor. Let us do the rest." That hasn't worked out well for the system. Over the past few years I've becoming a vocal advocate for teaching how the healthcare system functions to students during their graduate and post graduate residency training. It has become my de facto talking point when giving medical student and resident presentations. I think the concept resonates with my target audience. I am surprised this has not becoming an integral part of medical education. We spend years teaching students about the minutiae of things like the Krebs cycle pediatric glycogen storage disorders and Lillequist's membrane; but zero about healthcare economics (specifically how the money moves), the inconsistencies of the RBRVS and, perhaps most important, who gets to define the actual value of care delivery (hint - its NOT the physicians). Many of us advance through medical education with the attitude that we will just focus on medicine and leave the other nonsense to the the experts - an attitude fostered by the institutions supposedly empowered to educate us. They have done countless generations of physicians a disservice by keeping us blinded to the realities of a system increasingly designed to devalue the years we spent in training. I am surprised the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the ACGME haven't taken more proactive steps to address this. The premise that healthcare works better when we take a cadre of the most intelligent, dedicated and diligent students studying medicine, keep them willfully ignorant of the larger system they'll be working in and then leave them to be micromanaged by a growing tier of bureaucratic mediocrities is laughable. It's also the reality in which we exist. Will Flanary captures the essence of this fallacy in his ever pointed and comedically brilliant manner. For the system to work better, physicians must be better educated on how it works and then take an active ownership stake in running things.
