A great post summing up a fantastic summer teaching on our Medical course by Shaan Kulkarni. Shaan worked with us in 2023 as a phenomenal College Mentor at our site in Wadham in his summer break from his medical degree. Having him return this year to teach our college students has been an absolute pleasure. Being able to inspire the new generation of medics while also being well placed to offer advice for our students applying for a degree in medicine has shown Shaan to be an outstanding teacher. Thanks for spending your summer with us Shaan!!!
Teaching is a crucial skill for every medical professional, yet it remains one of the most underemphasized aspects of the university curriculum. Over the past six weeks, I've had the privilege of serving as a Medicine Tutor with Summer Boarding Courses at St Hugh's College, Oxford. In this role, I was responsible for planning and delivering lessons designed to introduce students to the field of medicine. The students, aged 14-17, came from diverse educational backgrounds and various parts of the world. It was a genuine pleasure to work with so many students who shared a passion for medicine. Watching that passion grow over the course of the summer school was incredibly rewarding. Teaching a large class with mixed abilities presented challenges, but it also provided valuable lessons in effective teaching. The feedback I received through lesson observations allowed me to refine my approach, ensuring that I met the needs of both the class as a whole and individual students. It has been an honor to teach and inspire future medics from around the world this summer. Receiving positive feedback directly from the students was especially gratifying, as it confirmed that my efforts had a meaningful impact on their learning experience. I am grateful to Summer Boarding Courses for their support in this role. I look forward to continuing to teach alongside my future career!
Cheers guys! It’s been a pleasure
