I seem to have a developed a slight obsession with Geodesic Domes. Not quite the mid-life crisis I had anticipated, but I'll take it. 😎 This all came from reading a great book by the founder of Patagonia called "Let my people go surfing" that I picked up in a charity shop in Totnes. It is an absolute cracker. Within it I spotted repeated references to people like Stuart Brand (founder of the whole earth catalogue) and Buckminster Fuller, who amongst many things invented the geodesic dome. This led to a joyful internet rabbit hole of research and it turns out these people are the sorts of people who influenced the people that influence us today. The OOG's if you like. It turns out that Buckminster Fuller coined this idea of the need 'to do more with less' as a response to finite resources on the earth and ever growing demand. His geodesic dome is the embodiment of 'doing more with less' because it maximises interior space while minimises material usage. It struck me last week that the idea of 'doing more with less' is a perfect mantra to adopt when working to improve public services where resources are tight and demand is ever increasing. In order to design and run better public services we need to be pragmatic. We need to be able to do more with less in order to deliver sustainable services. So what does this mean for our practice as service designers? How might we do more with less and still deliver our intended outcomes? This feels like its all about efficiency and effectiveness - perhaps reusing, reducing and recycling but that's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. This feels like both a huge challenge and also a massive opportunity for our practice. So how might we do more with less when designing and delivering services?
