Research has found that 46% of people who die by suicide have a known mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone, and although they can be common, they often indicate something more serious. This month in particular and every month thereafter, we hold a deep respect for the value of every mind and believe that the human mind is infinitely valuable, fostering imagination, intelligence, perception, and so much more. We have the power to change the trajectory of people’s lives. Suicide prevention awareness begins with complex conversations that are often avoided but should be met with genuine honesty and care. In July 2022, the U.S. transitioned the 10-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to 988, an easy-to-remember three-digit number for 24/7 crisis care. Since its launch, reports show 988 has received almost 5 million contacts (calls, chats, texts). But as a new service, no research existed on its usage: awareness of it, trust (or lack of) in it, or how to reach key populations with impactful messaging. To fill this gap, the Ad Council Research Institute (ACRI), in partnership with National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and Suicide Prevention Resource Center, and supported by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), today launched new formative research about the awareness, perspectives, and current and potential usage of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline among eight key populations that are at higher risk for or disproportionately impacted by suicide. We are delighted to announce the theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for the years 2024-2026: "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with an associated call to action: "Start the Conversation". Selected through a public consultation with more than 250 responses from 56 countries, this will be our official theme for the next three years. The aim of the theme is to raise awareness about the importance of changing the narrative surrounding suicide, reducing stigma, and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. This theme also includes emphasising the need to prioritise mental health and suicide prevention in policy-making, calling for government action.  As members of the community, everyone plays a crucial role in changing the narrative on suicide. Whether you are a mental health professional, a survivor, a friend, or a family member, your voice matters. Together, we can challenge stigma, promote understanding, and save lives. The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for the next three years has been announced. It resonates with the work I do as an Alternatives to Suicide Facilitator and instructor of multiple mental health programs. The new theme for #WorldSuicidePreventionDay for the next three years is ‘Change the Narrative’ and I couldn’t be any happier. In a world where existing stigma related to #mentalhealth still prevents funding for specific programmes, especially on #suicideprevention, this theme that the International Association for Suicide Prevention launched represents an opportunity to engage with advocacy groups, policymakers, and practitioners and start the conversation on the urgency to build a #compassionate world, free of #suicide.

One way of reducing suicide is by blocking access to a single lethal means – and in the case of a new article in The New York Times – that means the completion of a suicide barrier on the Golden Gate Bridge. Politicians and mental health advocates alike are looking at ways to reduce suicide in the US, where unlike other wealthy countries, the suicide rate has risen over the past two decades. However, blocking one lethal means is only a temporary solution. Those who experience suicidal ideation need access to mental health resources and professionals specialized in helping people with suicidal thoughts. We have a number of resources for those involved in suicide prevention, ranging from the highly-regarded journal Crisis to a range of books on suicide prevention and survival. Last night I had the opportunity to present the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s community program: Talk Saves Lives. TSL is an introduction to suicide prevention. As a multiple suicide attempt survivor it has meant the world to me to have the platform to educate folks about this leading cause of death. Connecting people to resources and support has been life changing. By breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide, we create a safe space for individuals to share their struggles, seek help, and access resources. Open dialogue involves creating platforms for discussion in various settings, such as schools, workplaces, communities, and online forums. It entails promoting empathy, active listening, and non-judgmental attitudes to encourage people to speak up about their mental health challenges. Educational initiatives play a vital role in raising awareness about the warning signs of suicide, destigmatizing mental illness, and promoting available resources for support and intervention. This includes providing training for teachers, healthcare professionals, and community leaders on suicide prevention strategies and crisis intervention. Furthermore, media campaigns and social media outreach can amplify the message of suicide prevention, reaching a wider audience and challenging harmful stereotypes. Sharing stories of hope, recovery, and resilience can inspire others to seek help and overcome feelings of isolation. Support networks, including hotlines, support groups, and online communities, offer vital resources for individuals experiencing suicidal ideation or supporting someone in crisis. By fostering connections and providing a listening ear, these networks help individuals feel valued, understood, and less alone in their struggles. I would say, encouraging open dialogue on suicide prevention involves creating a culture of compassion, understanding, and support where individuals feel empowered to seek help, share their experiences, and work together to prevent suicide.
