To reduce suicide risk in communities through strength-based, culturally consistent education, empowerment, and community engagement.
Understanding the Warning Signs and Risk Factors for Emotional Distress Emotional distress can manifest in various ways among different groups, particularly following natural or human-caused disasters. Such events can leave lasting impacts, with stress symptoms varying in duration and intensity among children, adults, and first responders. Children and Youth: Children, especially those who have experienced previous disasters or significant life disruptions, are particularly vulnerable to emotional distress. Signs in younger children (ages 6-11) can include withdrawal from social activities, aggression, and a decline in school performance. Adolescents (ages 12-18) may exhibit physical complaints, resistance to authority, and engage in high-risk behaviors like substance misuse. The National Child Traumatic Stress Network emphasizes that the emotional responses of children and teens are heavily influenced by the reactions of parents and caregivers (NCTSN, n.d.). Adults: Adults, who often juggle roles as first responders, survivors, and caregivers, may experience emotional distress characterized by fatigue, anger, avoidance of social interactions, and physical symptoms like headaches. Those with prior trauma, chronic illness, or recent significant stressors are at increased risk for severe emotional stress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Balancing the immediate demands of crisis response with personal and familial needs can be particularly challenging (SAMHSA, 2007). First Responders and Recovery Workers: First responders face unique stressors, including prolonged separation from loved ones, exposure to life-threatening situations, and witnessing traumatic events. Signs of stress among these individuals can include rapid heart rate, confusion, risky behaviors, and irritability. Preparedness training and stress management skills are crucial for mitigating these stressors (SAMHSA, 2014). Women and Girls: Disasters can exacerbate intimate partner violence and family violence, placing women and girls at heightened risk. The chaotic environment and displacement to shelters with inadequate security can further increase their vulnerability. It is essential to have accessible resources and support systems for those affected by violence (National Domestic Violence Hotline, n.d.).
