Traci Johnson, MPM emphasizes the need to shift from transactional to transformational philanthropy by focusing on #relationships over #transactions. She applies a Trust-Based Philanthropy Project lens to #grantmaking. For example: 👊 co-designing programs with community input, 💰 compensating community members, and 😍 extending support beyond grant dollars. One minor edit I would make to this stellar article: "The ability to leverage social, moral, intellectual, reputational, and financial capital requires programmatic staff to have relationships with #grantees and communities beyond what they see in grant applications." AND final reports. The reporting and application process needs to be revised to facilitate #learning and #impact generation --- so that we can leverage our collective #inputs #talents #passion to begin solving this planet's wicked problems. So many #nonprofits survive by the renewal of #philanthropic funding. Renewal information may not come until after the final report is submitted and therefore, from the grantee perspective, so much hinges on that document ... and the #future support they may or may not receive for their efforts. Traci, continues, "We must be intentional about creating safe spaces where nonprofit leaders can share their successes, challenges, and failures—and where they are valued as educators and thought partners." We are better together 🌻

Capacity-building grants are key to helping nonprofits scale their community impact. Yet, when grants rely too heavily on metrics, they can overlook real community needs—creating a mismatch between funders and grantees, especially for Black and Indigenous-led organizations. This blog post from Exponent Philanthropy's Hannah Smith—Manager, Editorial and Publications—underscores the importance of making capacity-building grants more flexible, particularly for organizations led by Black and Indigenous people. At Foundant, we’re grateful to see these crucial discussions becoming more commonplace and encourage even more dialogue around equitable philanthropy in the future. I always say that the most important stewardship decision a nonprofit board can make is the decision to close or merge. Every year, a board should take a responsible look at this question, even if the organization is doing well. Why? Because what matters is the mission, and if the mission is being done better by someone else who serves your same target beneficiaries, you have an obligation to put the beneficiaries' interests over your nonprofit's. I know it is hard, but having helped organizations through this process, I can say that the results are powerful. Thanks for the original post, Kevin Dean, Ed.D.!

A wonderful, important article from National Council of Nonprofits on an important topic, especially in the face of challenging times in the nonprofit sector. "Sometimes responsible leaders find themselves considering something that might feel unthinkable—closing their organization. Euphemisms and metaphors abound, but whether we call it sunsetting, winding down, retiring, or pulling the plug, let’s have an honest conversation about knowing when the time is right for an organization to take its final bow." https://lnkd.in/eMDwrShF

🌟 BIPOC nonprofits are engines of change—but only if we fuel them. 🌟 Too often, these organizations are denied funding for lacking infrastructure while needing that same funding to build it. It's a frustrating catch-22. Here’s how funders can make a real impact: 1️⃣ Invest in infrastructure, not just programs. Supporting organizational capacity (think: HR, financial management, and fundraising) equips nonprofits to sustain and grow their mission. 2️⃣ Understand the journey isn’t linear. Growth varies—some nonprofits take off fast, others grow steadily. Be patient and adaptive. 3️⃣ Acknowledge strengths AND gaps. Passion alone can’t run a nonprofit. Strategic capacity-building programs like Fair Chance’s three-year cohort show how targeted investments create measurable, lasting impact.
