Last Tuesday, I had my weekly #Roastbits #YouTube Live program with Roastbrief. And we talked about Cannes Lions I wasn't there this year, preferred to focus on South Summit and DES | Digital Enterprise Show. Anyway I've been reading several articles about this year's edition, and in my readings and the conversation in the program, humour was a key topic. Last year it was set-up as a category in the Cultural section, apparently because since the pandemic we have been very serious. Probably true. However I can't see the pont. It certainly sparks debate on whether it restricts or enhances creative expression. Humor is a fundamental human trait, that shouldn't be confined to a specific category, potentially stifling creativity by forcing it into a predefined box. Humor is not an industry/ marketing way of working. Is a transversal expression. Ultimately, the impact of this new category on creativity is to be seen.

Yesterday I took the time to watch this SXSW talk by Jack Conte, the founder of Patreon. A must-watch if you are into digital media, startups & the digital economy. At some point he talks about two very different things that are intertwined with product & business either in the news or digital media in general; “maximizing attention” or “building relationships" and how TikTok made it harder for everyone who’s relying on direct support from their community to energize their fans, build relationships and a business. A few months ago, when everyone was talking about an “extinction-level event” in the media, I was writing that the news business is suffering from a structural crisis; Conte uses a more Shakespearean phrase called “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫” despite his belief that the follower won’t die because the concept is too valuable for creativity on the net. Big Like. So what does he see for the future? A new wave of internet companies focusing on deeper connections on the net. Qurio aspires to be one of them, aimed at helping the industry we grew up in as professionals and are passionate about: local news. We want to help smaller news publishers make their homepages a place where they build strength with their community. Patreon has been helping art & community exist on the internet for some years now as a membership platform. Now, it’s transforming into something more holistic: A media, community, and business foundation for the next decade of professional creativity on the internet organized on the concept of the “true follower.” This is so inspiring for a tiny startup like ours, which is only in closed private beta. I wish we could do the same for digital journalism, that's suffering so much. And I’d like to thank everyone who’s trusted us in this journey—you know who you are! If we haven’t talked and are connected, I would love to chat with any of you about all the above and our vision at Qurio. In more practical terms, if you are interested in energizing your readership while respecting their intelligence and time, message me, you might need our MVP, and it needs you, too. 🤓 #Journalism #AudienceEngagement #MediaInnovation #LocalNews #ReclaimCuriosity💪 https://lnkd.in/dYr_ydSs

I’ve just launched the very first Struktur Society Patreon! https://lnkd.in/gH-_quqC Many people have suggested I do this over the past couple of years. I was reluctant to start asking for support until I got clear on what Struktur and I were going to be doing. I wanted to make sure I could provide consistent content. It needed to be sustainable on many fronts. To do that, I had to make sure what I was doing was something that... 1) I loved and could keep doing 2) was useful and relevant 3) could make a difference over the long haul Struktur Society and I now focus on three things: 1) Podcasting and Speaking (Connection) 2) Writing (Cultivation) 3) Design (Creation) Many people have wanted to support what I do with Struktur and so I’ve created the new Struktur Society Patreon to work in conjunction with the Struktur Society Substack. While Substack is the platform that hosts my content, both platforms allow supporters to access all of it, subscribe as a free member, or become a financial patron at the same price. While I hope to always make my content free to everyone, the financial support allows me to keep creating. I chose to join both Substack and Patreon because their mission is to support creators. I control my content, I own my content, and I receive the bulk of the money for my creative work (they take a small fee, versus them giving me a few pennies per stream, etc). My choice to join Patreon was recently reinforced after watching the talk from SXSW this past March with #Patreonfounder and musician #JackConte called The Death Of The Follower. His take and timeline on creator platforms and artist-crushing algorithms will blow your mind! Please consider joining one of my support platforms, even just as a free member/supporter. It really helps! As my supporter base grows, so will our community. And for all current and past supporters, free and paid...THANK YOU! ⚡ Struktur Society Patreon: https://lnkd.in/gH-_quqC Struktur Society Substack: https://lnkd.in/guGRbGMD The UnStruktured Podcast The Nonlinear Path Struktur Koncept #struktur #art #design #music #future #creator #community

The Death of the Follower. And other takeaways from the creator industry for the hospitality business. This video by Jack Conte, CEO of Patreon, is a super interesting one. It shows the history and future of the internet and social media. Patreon, a monetization platform for content creators, charges a commission of 9 to 12 percent of creators' monthly income. It is used by videographers, webcomic artists, writers, podcasters, musicians, adult content creators, and other kinds of creators. What does this have to do with the hospitality business? A lot, actually. The 'new' internet will evolve around community, commerce, and media. ROI will become ROE - Return on Experience. Three major takeaways: - Invest in true fans - Make beautiful things (create beautiful experiences) - Know what you want, what matters to you, what comes from within. #CreatorIndustry #HospitalityBusiness #Patreon #BusinessTips

This is the best thing I've watched this week. Here are three reasons you should watch it. 1️⃣ I love that he's not black and white. It's been a week where Scott Galloway annoyed a lot of marketers by doubling down on his claim that 'The Era of Brand is Dead' on the Uncensored CMO podcast. People were quick to point out the exceptions to Prof G's claim. But can you blame the man? Aren't click-bait claims just a necessary evil in 2024 if you want to get noticed? Well, not according to Jack Conte. It's refreshing to watch him manage to give a muscular speech full of certainty and conviction without having to resort to click-bait or over simplifications. Mark Ritson famously advocates for 'bothism', and Conte embodies bothism in this speech. He points out that there's still a role for reach-based social platforms. He's not suggesting that it's either/or. He just believes there's a case for an alternative (skip to 26:58 for that bit). 2️⃣ I love that it's real. Keynote speeches can be sterile - points you've cobbled together. But occasionally a keynote speech can feel like somebody's life spilling out on stage, but with a cohesive story underpinning it. This is one of those. He shares endless photos from his journey as a struggling musician and content creator, and gets a round of applause when he describes getting 40 people to a gig. The musicians in the audience get it. Real recognize real. 3️⃣ I love that it makes sense, even just a little bit, of the dull, sameification of the world that we're all living through. Whether you call it 'sea of sameness' (ironically, we all seem to use that phrase now) or something else, most of us have observed how dull things have become. Adam Morgan has a slide where he shows the colour of cars over the years. We used to buy cars in a range of colours; now it's almost exclusively black, silver or grey. What I love about this speech is that it explains why this sameification is not an accident. Creative people have not become less creative. And social media users haven't changed in any meaningful way. All that's happened is algorithmically driven companies have got better at predicting the quick fixes that will get engagement, and then reinforced the feedback loop. Mental fast food which we salivate over with our thumbs, even if only for a second. If we want to get off the blandwagon (h/t to my colleague Toby Brown for that marvellous pun), we're going to need to understand that the opponent is not chance; the opponent is a collection of the most successful companies in the history of the human race. He ends with a great message: "Don't let somebody else tell you what you want. Because then you'll end up with what *they* want, instead of what *you* want." Jack Conte, founder of Patreon, in his keynote speech 'Death of the Follower & the Future of Creativity on the Web' at #SXSW in March. ----------- #creativity #SXSW2024 #SXSW24 #patreon #1000truefans #creator #letsmakethismoreinteresting

Is your marketing messaging and sales stories aligned and effective? Effective marketing is a way to tell a story that moves the customer in the right direction. Your direction. 🤩 It doesn’t matter if you are Bud Light trying to reach a specific audience, or the regional commercial security firm trying to reach health care institutions. The message is critical and so is the reaching the audience. Just ask the folks at Bud Light? 😗 Matt Anderson and I discuss marketing messaging on my podcast Sales and Cigars.
