Paris 2024: The incredible story behind the Olympic and Paralympic medals The athletes who will compete at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 now have an extra motivation to reach the podium: in addition to bringing home a gold, silver or bronze medal, they will also take a small piece of Paris with them, materialised by a section of the Eiffel Tower integrated in each one. It all began with a rather special brief. Bring creativity and poignancy to a classic yet essential object symbolising the Olympic and Paralympic Games. But how can the medal be even more special? Is it possible to go beyond the traditional with something as classic and long-established as the medals? The answer: yes. By including a piece of France inside – literally. Chaumet, the French jewellery house, used its world-recognised expertise to take the concept to another level in order to magnify the idea, make it shine and give life to something that could have been ridiculous, but turned out to be quite special. This time, the designers didn’t have to deal with a timeless diamond or a ruby, but a material that had aged. They decided to think of it and work with it: the Eiffel Tower, at the centre of an exceptional jewel. Each medal made for Paris 2024, revealed on Thursday 8 February, has an original piece of the Eiffel Tower in it, and it comes with a supporting certificate of authenticity.

Paris 2024 Paralympic Medals vs Olympic Medals🏅 What’s the difference between the Olympic and the Paralympic games medals? While the front sides are similar: • Both were designed by Chaumet and minted by Monnaie de Paris. • The middle has a piece of the Eiffel Tower cut into a hexagon, the geometric shape of France. The Paralympic medal’s reverse side differs from the Olympic version: • The traditional symbols of the goddess of victory, Athena and the Acropolis are replaced by the Eiffel Tower. • The design shows a low-angle view of the Tower’s base. • The words “Paris” and “2024” frame the Tower’s pillars. • These words are inscribed in Braille, symbolizing accessibility and honoring Louis Braille, the French inventor of the writing system. . Visually impaired athletes can distinguish the medals by touch - lines are engraved on the medal’s edge: I for gold, II for silver and III for bronze. Why the difference of imagery for the reverse side? (Athena vs base of the Eiffel tower) I’m not sure. What do you think? Which design do you prefer? The medals of the next Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 have been unveiled! Whether they are gold, silver or bronze, they will all contain a very special piece of metal that was once part of the Eiffel Tower. Cut into a hexagon, the geometric shape evokes France to the point of becoming its nickname. Also on the same side, thin lines are projected at irregular intervals all around the iron hexagon. Struck rather than engraved, these rays bring relief and shine to a medal that is far from smooth. India's performance in the Olympics: 🇬🇧 London 2012 - 6 medals (2 Silver, 4 Bronze) 🇧🇷 Rio 2016 - 2 medals (1 Silver, 1 Bronze) 🇯🇵 Tokyo 2020 - 7 medals (1 Gold, 2 Silver, 4 Bronze) 🇫🇷 Paris 2024 - 10 (1 Gold, 3 Silver, 6 Bronze) ----------------------------------------------------------- India's performance in the Paralympics: 🇬🇧 London 2012 - 4 medals (1 Gold, 3 Bronze) 🇧🇷 Rio 2016 - 4 medals (2 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze) 🇯🇵 Tokyo 2020 - 19 medals (5 Gold, 8 Silver, 6 Bronze) 🇫🇷 Paris 2024 - 29 (7 Gold, 9 Silver, 13 Bronze) ----------------------------------------------------------- Over the years, we've seen significantly greater tangible growth in our performances and medal tallies in the Paralympics than in the Olympics. The Olympics and athletes always receive better media coverage; they're discussed on the news often, are viral on social media and are more prevalent in tea-shop discussions. Yet, the less discussed Paralympics and para-athletes seem to be emerging as the quiet winners, delivering improved results for India. We're at the 71st spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics and 18th in the Paralympics. That number in Tokyo 2020 was 48 vs 24, and in Rio 2016 was 67 vs 43. While Paralympic performances have improved consistently (43->24->18), Olympic performances have swayed inconsistently (67->48->71). I wonder what the reasons for this disparity could be. Is it because the Olympics stage is saturated and harder to break into, and the Paralympics still has some way to go before it reaches saturation? Is it because of targeted schemes by the government? I tried looking this one up and found one scheme, The Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), which was launched in 2014 and has since supported both Olympians and Paralympians. However, the breakdown of athletes under TOPS shows that while the scheme supports a large number of Olympians, it has been particularly impactful in boosting India's Paralympic performance. Thoughts? #Olympics #Paralympics #IndiaAtParis2024 #Paris2024

1968-2016 15 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 - 12 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐬 2020-2024 2 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 - 45 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐬 & counting 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 for Indian athletes that has led to the immense success we’ve been witnessing in Paris Paralympics? 🏆 𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 From 1968 to 2016, only 95 Indian athletes participated. Compare that to Tokyo 2020 with 54 athletes, and Paris 2024 with an impressive 84 participants. 🏆 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 & 𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 For the first time, a dedicated recovery center was set up for Indian athletes at the Games village, supporting injury management and rehabilitation during the event. 🏆 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 For the Paris Paralympics cycle, the Indian government allocated ₹74 crores, significantly up from ₹26 crores for Tokyo 2020. This also includes near doubling of coaching and support staff. 🏆 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 With Badminton introduced at Tokyo 2020, India seized the chance, winning 4 medals in Tokyo and 5 more in Paris. This marks a brilliant case study for how to revolutionise a sports category within a country. 🔳 We see a ton of commentary circulating over social media highlighting the population advantage India has to achieve greatness in the said event. We also see folks comparing budgets allocated to Paralympics with that of Olympics. Some intellectuals also called out less competition in these games. Really? 🔳 I say, any event that gets held at a global stage, where 170 countries participate, the competition is bound to remain fierce. To meet such standards, apart from raw talent, it demands necessary infrastructure and financial backing for the participating athletes. Without admin support, timely acknowledgement and talent scouting, no nation can achieve greatness at any sport, but can proudly say, India is no such nation. Indian contingent secured 18th rank by winning highest ever medals totalling 29 at just concluded Paris Paralympics 2024. Heartiest congratulations to all the medal winners and entire Indian contingent and it's support teams. This has been greatest show so far by Indian Team Now more about Paralympics : The word “Paralympic” derives from the Greek preposition “para” (beside or alongside) and the word “Olympic”. Its meaning is that Paralympics are the parallel Games to the Olympics and illustrates how the two movements exist side-by-side. Paralympic athletes/sportspersons have an impairment in body structures and functions that lead to a competitive disadvantage in sport. What is the motto of Paralympic? The symbol reflects the Paralympic Motto, “Spirit in Motion,” representing the strong will of every Paralympian. The Paralympic Symbol also emphasises the fact that Paralympic athletes are constantly inspiring and exciting the world with their performances: always moving forward and never giving up. Finally the message for all : While majority of us who are able bodied keep complaining and giving excuses for our failures and our sub- standard performance whereas we have these paralympians who compete at international levels and bring laurels to the country. What is important in life is that "fighting spirit" , that "fire in the belly" to succeed...

India’s performance at Paralympic games 2024 has been truly overwhelming. The edition has been remarkable for total tally of 29 medals is short only by 2 medals that Indian contingent had cumulatively secured across all previous editions. India finishing at no. 18 in world tally underlines the continuous progress being made since finishing 67th in London, 2012 with a sole medal. Avani Lekhara and Sumit Antil have successfully defended their gold medals and a total of 12 medals won by Indian athletes in back-to-back editions is a testament to their continued nurturing and exposure at international level. They have been the forebearer of India’s pride at a tournament which historically has not been given its due importance. Indian government, I believe, has played a key part in supporting the players with various government schemes, providing continuous international exposure, higher spending (Rs. 74 Cr in current cycle compared to Rs. 26 Cr in previous cycle), better coaching staff etc. This has resulted in a higher return on investment than Olympics although I believe the focus on both these tournaments should be increased and should be much more organized. Unlike other sports tournaments, Paralympics is an international event that encompasses far more significance. The differently abled athletes have clearly shown that overcoming obstacles depend only on strong mindset, determination and willpower. Nothing can validate this more than our very own Sheetal Devi hitting a perfect shot without having arms. Not just Indians, this can be learnt from any player performing for any country and in any event. There is no better spectacle and event that exudes hope and spirit in a higher degree than Paralympics. As our honorable Prime Minister said, we should look at differently abled people with pride rather than pity. They are national heroes and let us celebrate their success and achievement with equal joy and vigour. Special mention to the parents/ family members of these athletes, who have not shied and supported them in achieving the unthinkable. Let’s hope this continues. P.S: Although quite late posting on this, I believe this is a big event that only justifies that either we can make excuses or we can make ways.
