Life is better on two wheels 🚲That’s what Mike’s Bike Shop from Dieppe, New Brunswick believes. From sweeping floors of a local bike shop to running his own successful cycling business, founder Rick Snyder is one of this year’s #BackingSmall winners! Rick’s story begins all the way back in 1979 when his fascination with BMX bikes led him to volunteer at a local business: “There was a cool bike shop at the end of my school’s street, and I would spend every spare hour there absorbing everything I could.” All that dedication eventually paid off when Rick was offered a job at the store, and his love of cycling only grew from there: “I can remember the shop owner telling clients that they should wait to talk to me because I was the expert. That was an amazing feeling!” After 25 years working at the store he grew up in, Rick and his wife Heather seized the opportunity to buy Mike’s Bike Shop. The small independent store now offers a wide selection of bicycles, parts, and accessories to cycling enthusiasts all over North America from their storefront in the Maritimes. The e-commerce side of the business has grown rapidly over the last five years and shipping has played a key role in their expansion: “In the online marketplace, your customer rating is the face of your business. The key to riding a bike is to keep peddling. My eleven-year-old daughter had forgotten how to ride her bike and she desperately needed to remember for a cycling proficiency test coming up at school. Teaching her the first time had been 'challenging' to say the least, but because she hadn't done it for over a year, her already fragile confidence was now compounded by the urgency of the school test. First attempts were not good and some minor tantrums followed. (From both of us.) She quit a few times. "I can't stay on it! I can't steer! I don't know how to work the brakes!" I breathed deeply. In my desperation, I blurted out, "You've just got to keep peddling Sweetheart. That's all you need to do. The rest will come from that." It's so obvious really. Keep peddling. But, in the tension of the moment, when emotions are high and the stakes are raised, we don't always think of the obvious answer. She took it on board, though, and it changed everything. Within a minute, she was flying up and down the street, smiling and proud of herself. She soon learnt to work her brakes, she mastered controlling the steering. As I stood on the side of the road, while she happily rode up and down the cul-de-sac, gaining confidence with each circuit, I fully realised the power of the accidental metaphor 'you've just got to keep peddling'. I had the privilege of working for, and learning from, one of the greatest bike designers of all time, Benno Baenziger. At New Pedal we spend much of our time developing new channels to reach new riders. In our travels we have ample discussions about infrastructure, vehicle features, policy, and incentives. These are all important ingredients to generate true mode shift, but one piece of the puzzle is often overlooked: designing to captivate the human psyche. As the “sales guy” at Benno Bikes, it drove me crazy waiting weeks for Benno to finish something as “simple” as a single line in a decal. I’d think to myself: come on Benno, what are we doing, let’s get this into production! But that attention to design detail made all the difference, and is what I believe will be required to make #micromobility truly mainstream in the US. The proof goes all the way back to Benno’s original bike brand, Electra, a simple cruiser bike. This was not a cutting edge piece of technology, or even a new concept; however Benno was able to rip away the stigma associated with cycling in the US, and make riding a bike cool again. I didn’t know Benno at the time (we wouldn’t meet until 10 years later), but I remember working at a local bicycle dealer and scratching my head at the phenomenon unfolding in front of me. Our mechanics couldn’t build Electra Townies fast enough. Everyone had to have one! The car industry understands this very well, and has spent billions of dollars to tug at our emotions. You have to give them credit. To compete we absolutely need better cycling infrastructure, legislation, and the continued hard work of the entire industry (more to come as we spotlight many of our other amazing bike/scooter partners), but hopefully we can all incorporate a bit of Benno’s creative thinking into our own; no matter if you are designing the next great vehicle, a bike parking facility, or hosting a #tdm webinar.
