I had the wonderful opportunity to speak to a group of early career researchers at Te Hiranga Rū QuakeCoRE this week on what an assessment panel looks for in research proposals. Below are a few tips that we spoke about --> What is a panel looking for? - Clarity – Purpose, problem, approach, outputs, path to uptake, impact - How does this fit into existing work? Is it addressing a gap? - Right skillsets in the team to deliver? If not, what is the plan to develop it? - Is the approach appropriate? Is ethics approval required? - Risks? Are they acceptable? - Does the team have the relationships required? Other tips regarding panels and writing proposals - Know who is on the panel - Write for everyone on the panel not just the technical expert - Understand the evaluation criteria - Get friends and colleagues to read your proposal - Make the panel’s job easy - avoid them having to hunt for the answer - Please graciously accept the panel/funder decision – do not approach panel members directly for feedback - speak to the funder for feedback.

- It´s not only a waste, but a shame that we scare international researchers away from a career in Sweden. The migration regulations collide with the employment system for junior researchers and the flaws in Academia hits international researcher harder than others. A change is needed soo that these talents can thrive in Swedish businesses. This morning, our Director General Frida Lawenius participated in a discussion about international junior researchers' career opportunities outside of academia. Almost half of those who began their doctoral studies in 2022 came from another country. In the field of natural sciences, the number was even higher – six out of ten. Although many have come here for the opportunity to pursue a career, a large proportion leave Sweden after their education. This is demonstrated by a new report produced by EURAXESS Sweden with the support of Vinnova, where Naturvetarna contributes and explains the situation for our members. Academia, industry, and other societal actors need to work together to improve support so that international junior researchers can contribute the expertise that Swedish companies need. We assist you as a member with CV reviews, support before interviews, and advice on what demands you can place on your employer and what you should consider when you receive a job offer. 🔎Being an influential expert in my chosen field is essential to developing and maintaining long-term relationships with others. As an expert, I must be able to demonstrate a deep knowledge and understanding of my subject matter as well as the ability to communicate that knowledge effectively. My research must be rigorous and up-to-date, so that I can provide reliable information and resources to my audiences. I must also be able to think critically and creatively about the issues I am addressing 👉https://lnkd.in/gPsYXEvW

A busy morning as meetings with two China CEOs from global asset managers went well. China is calling for solid work and efforts to be made to better facilitate cross-border investment and financing to attract more foreign-funded institutions and long-term capital to China, enhancing competitiveness and influence of Shanghai as an international financial center, as to consistently advance financial high-standard opening up - an encouraging sigh with those significant policy shift underway amid recent economic challenges and tension with the west - the dust yet to settle and we still have a lot of reasons to worry, everyone should remain optimistic though. “If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees." What an inspirational quote about business and life! Always enjoy working with my candidates and clients who embrace long game - work hard on right things to do now for a big payoff later, so as my work as a financial services recruiter - focus on long-term goals and how each interaction and touchpoint along the way is getting you closer to achieving them is pivotal in recruitment. Will be embarking on the search for a senior appointment - love my work!

Language used in job ads can negatively affect diverse hiring… As a hiring manager, you want to add so much to a job ad to get the best traction to hire the right individual for the team. But in many cases, especially in the tech industry, the way in which these are written can really determine the candidate pool you generate! A few examples of non-inclusive JD instances: ❌ Ridiculous amounts of years of experience required (10+ years for a Manager position), when we all know quality of experience always outweigh the years of experience. 🛒 SHOPPING LIST of technical stacks – every library or language under the sun. Just put the core required and desirables separate. Using gender bias words… 👦🏻 Masculine coded words – “Driven”, “Competitive”, “Strong”, “Ambitious” etc. 👩🏾 Feminine coded words – “Responsible”, “Support”, ‘Feel”, “Collaboration” etc. 👎🏻 Racially coded words such as Excellent English-language skills which can put multilingual candidates at a disadvantage. Here’s some links to look into the science and data behind coded words - (PDF) Evidence That Gendered Wording in Job Advertisements Exists and Sustains Gender Inequality (researchgate.net) & 3 Ways Coded Language is Costing You Applicants (linkedin.com) Although as a female I am driven, competitive and ambitious for sure and many of my male counterparts are hugely supportive and work well collaboratively so it’s interesting to see the science behind how the wider market may perceive words in a job advert 🤔 Sometimes the most simplistic changes can truly make a huge difference in approving your EVP in the tech market and it may be worth experimenting with different wording to see if the candidate pool and diversity increases! If you have any questions or would like to run through your hiring strategy with D,E&I in mind, please feel free to reach out as I’m always happy to help! #techhiring #diversitymatters #hiringtips
