That's progress! In 1954 Roger Bannister became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes. His time -- 3 minutes 59.4 seconds. When Bannister ran his historic race, I love how the stadium announcer added drama to the event by teasing the crowd by delaying his announcement of Bannister's race time for as long as possible: "Ladies and gentlemen, here is the result of event nine, the one mile: first, number forty one, R. G. Bannister, Amateur Athletic Association and formerly of Exeter and Merton Colleges, Oxford, with a time which is a new meeting and track record, and which—subject to ratification—will be a new English Native, British National, All-Comers, European, British Empire and World Record. The time was three..." The roar of the crowd drowned out the rest of the announcement! Interestingly, after all those years of runners attempting to run a sub four minute mile, Bannister's record stood for only 46 days before being broken by a runner named John Landy. But I think the most interesting part of the four minute mile story is that in 2023, there were 165 NCAA runners who ran sub four minute miles. That's progress! Business is the same as the runner's story. We need to learn more, be more efficient, and continue to do better, and be better, than we were the year before. And sometimes we need someone to show us what is possible! #leadership #progress

Experienced Non-Profit Senior Executive, Dream Big Go Big and Encourage and Take Care of Each Other Leader Ideology
Good News Friday is here! Now, whether you are a basketball fan or not, an Oakland University fan or not, last night was an absolute lesson in how one identifies where they are and sees the Dream where they want to go as Oakland upset Kentucky in the NCAA tournament, a 14 seed beating a 3 seed and powerhouse. The article I am reposting from Front Office Sports provides an insight to an individual who was a redshirt freshman at an DII school but whose dream was to be on the court with the best. If you follow basketball, this is a Dream, and one that takes what I hope every leader is willing to admit they need: 🌄 Willing to dream - Let lose, dream at work and dream at home, be willing to do it! You did it as a kid, you can do it again! Remember your dreams as a kid, you wanted to be the best at a certain sport, hobby, whatever it was and you would do everything to make it happen. Some of our best inventions and leaders have been those that dared to dream. People love to get behind a Dream! 🗣 Others - This individual, Jack Gohlke, needed coaches, trainers, his teammates, and many others at the university to be successful. Are you willing to let others help you be successful? 👷♂️ Hard Work - There will never be a substitute for this, and I am not talking about being so consumed that you don't have time for your family, others, or have horrible balance. But when you are in the arena, when you are in practice, when you are at work, you are giving your best, because you know the dream is worth it. Allowing yourself to dream, allowing others to help, working hard, are three great ways to see your life, both professional and personal, go to the next level! Have a powerful day and you have what it takes! #Dream #DreamBigGoBig #EncourageAndTakeCareOfEachOther
Five years ago, Jack Gohlke was a redshirt freshman at Division II Hillsdale College. Last night, he made 10 three-point shots and scored 32 points as 14-seed Oakland upset 3-seed Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament. #BusinessOfTheMadness | Acura (📸: Gregory Fisher/USA Today)

What can Jack Gohlke and the Oakland Grizzlies teach us about business? 👀 Listening to the post game interview last night…something caught my ear about this game…💥EXPERIENCE💥 Experience wins games…not talent that comes with blue chip, 5 star, legacy recruits. Kentucky is loaded with NBA talent, but they bolt for millions after year 1….coining the term “One and Done”. Average age of 19 yearly = NO EXPERIENCE ❌ Not OAKLAND!!! They’re a team of gritty ballers who are older…not NBA bound. Average age of 22 yearly = EXPERIENCE (Jack Gohlke 24)✅ To stay ahead in business you have stay hungry… Hunger =💥EXPERIENCE💥 The business world isn’t fair…you’ll always be facing a competitor who has a bigger budget, larger staff, better “resume” talent, etc…😩 Want to win? HIT THE BUSINESS GYM daily with training, industry knowledge, new tech stack, books, podcasts, etc… STAY HUNGRY Don’t be a Cinderella👊 #experience #training #outwork #marchmadness #notacinderella

That's how you stick with a program especially starting from the bottom.
In 1999, James Jones took over a Yale team that hadn't been to the NCAA Tournament since the '60s. He's now led the Bulldogs to March Madness four times in the past eight years and just beat 4-seed Auburn—Yale's biggest tournament win ever. "He built this program brick by brick." #BusinessOfTheMadness | Acura (📸: Kirby Lee/USA Today)

In 1954, Roger Bannister ran the very first sub 4-minute mile in the world. Once Bannister proved it could be done, it was only 46 days later that another runner broke it again...beating Bannister’s time. Just one year later, three runners broke the 4-minute barrier in the SAME race. Since then, more than 1,700 runners have broken a barrier that was once considered beyond reach. But it gets better... Before Bannister’s run, people believed that a 4-minute mile may only be possible in perfect conditions; perfect weather, on a particular kind of track, with the energy of a huge cheering crowd. But Bannister did it on a cold dreary day, on a wet track, in front of a small crowd. Do you think you have to have "perfect conditions" to go after your dream? Be mindful of the limitations you put on yourself because magic happens when we begin to entertain the idea that something might be possible. What's YOUR 4-Minute Mile?

March Reefer Madness: come up with the best cannabis-themed NCAA team name, men or women's, and you can win a custom team jersey with your weedy team name on it! We're still taking submissions to see who makes it to the Sweet 16, which will be voted on later this week. The top 4 winners make it to the Final Four. If you don't know the NCAA team names, don't fret, we got you! On the link in the comments is a list of team names to inspire you. The Final Four will be voted on via poll on LinkedIn, and the winner gets the jersey! But there's a catch: 3 of the 16 submissions will be from the Happy Cabbage team. That's right, you gotta compete with us! If one of our team's submissions wins the Final Four, the public runner up will also win the team jersey, don't worry. ;) However, so will the employee that submitted the winning name! It'll be a win/win. Who doesn't love that. It's not a tie. This isn't Europe. Or soccer. So give us your best shot! Link in the comments.

I’m curious, what did you think about Meghan Thee Stallion’s Ad for the Olympics? https://lnkd.in/emNzG5AF Sure, the Ad is now a few months dated but this is topical particularly during Black History Month… I’ll go first. Finally a woman of color in the mainstream talking about equestrian sports but black equestrians aren’t a new thing — so why have they been written out of the history books? And now that NBCUniversal has taken this leap forward, what is it really willing to push past one Ad? How are they going to change the conversation in who is deemed acceptable to participate in equestrian sports? But perhaps they are only focused on the number of likes that their Ad got. Equestrian sports is a $300B business that focuses on a select and elite few… but what if players like Nike, Adidas, and PUMA Group got in the game and then what if retailers like Target or Walmart waved their magic wands? I think that $300B could look like a hell of a lot more if there were more kids that saw themselves on horses or involved in equine activities…but what do I know 🤷🏽♀️. What say you?
