🏆 Exciting News! Winner @Hack the North - Canada's Largest Hackathon 🏆
I'm thrilled to announce that my team and I won at Hack the North this weekend! 🚀 It was an incredible experience, especially considering that it was my first two weeks at the University of Waterloo, and I'm already embracing the innovative culture here.
Our winning project, "Drive Sense" is an innovative way to improve apps like My Drive by Intact and Ajusto by thePersonal. These apps monitor your speed and acceleration to determine how well you drive. The better you drive, the more you save on your car insurance. However, their driver rating algorithm can be improved using machine vision to differentiate between necessary and unnecessary changes in acceleration. Inspired by the pressing need to improve road safety and assess driver competence, particularly under varying road conditions, our team set out to make a difference.
🚗 What does Drive Sense do? 🚗
Our app consists of a frontend, which connects to a GPS signal to track a car's acceleration and speed. It also includes a Map and a recording feature that employs Cohere's LLM to detect potentially violent or hateful speech in real-time, given a police pull-over. On the backend, we harnessed a plethora of algorithms and computer vision techniques. These models process input from a camera feed, analyzing surrounding cars, the color of traffic lights, and the size of car plates in front of drivers.
By detecting car plates, we can infer how close the driver is to the car in front and assess a driver's habits. Checking for red lights, correlated with GPS data, allows us to determine a driver's reaction time and provide an accurate rating of their driving skills.
🛠️ Built with:
Cohere, Django, OpenCV, PyTorch, React, Replit, Streamlit, YOLO
I'm incredibly proud of my team's hard work and dedication to creating a solution that can have a real impact on road safety. Congrats to my teammates Xin Lei Lin and Vaishvi Shah.
Thank you to everyone who supported us along the way, and to Hack the North for providing a platform to turn our ideas into reality. 🛣️
