The power of simple interventions Much as I’m curious about the potential of artificial intelligence in healthcare, I’m even l excited about interventions they have an outsized health impact. In medicine, we have a history of these kinds of interventions. For example, Dr. Semmelweis championed handwashing in the 1800’s years ahead of his time (more here if you’re interested https://lnkd.in/efiPq9GJ). A new addition to the list: brushing the teeth of ICU patients A new meta-analysis in JAMA Internal Medicine shows that brushing the teeth of ventilated patients lowers the risk of pneumonia and even reduces mortality. The relative risk reduction is 0.81 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.69-0.95. This is really remarkable for such a simple intervention. It is incredible hard to lower mortality in the ICU making it even more impressive that a simple intervention can have such a dramatic impact. The next challenge will be scaling up this practice across ICUs where nurses and other workers are stretched thin. Last week's edition of "In the Spotlight" article featured Breakthrough One Global Fellow Dr. Satjit Bhusri, MD, FACC, a triple board-certified physician and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), with extensive training from institutions like Lenox Hill Hospital, Cold Spring Harbor Labs, Harvard Medical School, and Yale School of Management. His personal experience as a heart disease survivor has shaped his commitment to delivering accessible and personalized care to his patients.    Dr. Satjit is the founder of the Upper East Side Cardiology & Vein Institute, where he offers state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and personalized treatment plans for various cardiovascular conditions. He emphasizes the importance of remote care monitoring, particularly in preventing re-hospitalizations.    Dr. Satjit identifies adoption and access as significant challenges, particularly for elderly and low socio-economic status patients who may lack access to necessary digital hardware.    He views digital health as a crucial avenue for expanding healthcare availability. He highlights its role in providing treatment to patients who face barriers to traditional healthcare access and in reducing re-hospitalization rates. Moreover, he notes the potential for higher reimbursement rates for digital health services, making it advantageous for both providers and patients.    When asked about his advice to healthcare professionals, he further urges healthcare professionals to embrace digital health, emphasizing that it's no longer an option but a necessity for staying relevant in the field and ensuring optimal patient care. As far as his future plans, Dr. Satjit aims to transition to a fully cloud-based practice within the next five years, eliminating paper-based processes entirely.    Overall, his insights underscore the transformative potential of digital health in improving healthcare access and outcomes, while also highlighting the urgency for healthcare professionals to adapt to this evolving landscape for the benefit of both themselves and their patients. Leading European Hospitals are implementing H2O outcome sets We are over the moon about a very important milestone for making patient-centric healthcare in Europe a reality. Members of the European University Hospital Alliance (EUHA) are rolling out H2O outcome sets to collect patient-reported outcomes in a standardized way. Together, we have defined standards for collecting patient-reported outcomes and testing them in the clinical day-to-day. What has been a vision for long, is now becoming reality as the project is entering the implementation phase.   Among the first to implement H2O outcome sets are the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the MedUni Wien. Already two clinics within Charité – in the area of IBD and diabetes - are using the so-called H2O pragmatic sets, aiming at keeping the effort around the collection process itself as low as possible, for patients and clinicians. Also, the Medical University Vienna has started to use the H2O outcome sets in their diabetes clinic for collecting PROs. A major milestone not only for patients and clinicians, but also for researchers all over the world.
