Frasers Centrepoint Trust was added to the STI effective from 18 March. This brought the total number of S-REITs in the STI to seven. Does this mean that the overall performance of S-REITs had a bigger impact on the movement of the STI? Did this inclusion drive FCT shares higher? Dan Chang, Investment Specialist at Phillip Securities, discusses the above and some of the 16 Singapore-listed stocks that have booked net retail inflow over the past 10 weeks. I went for a run yesterday and listened to yet more podcasts. This time, I listened to a discussion on Following the Rules about the intersection of risk, compliance and culture. Admittedly the podcast is hosted by my wife, but it was genuinely really quite interesting if you're into making money in financial services. Couple of interesting thoughts: - Risk, compliance and culture should all be deeply connected, not different siloes in the organisation. Risk needs to be owned by the front line, and culture needs to be seen not only as an HR topic. - The more 'alpha' the organisation, the less likely things get picked up early. Not having calls to your whistleblowing hotline is not necessarily a good thing. - People quickly get to things like D&I stats when they talk about culture. But there's no point in having these stats if you don't create the space and governance to give 'diverse' voices a hearing. - Stats suggest only 30% of boards are effective, only 34% of NEDs ask "probing" questions. Oooph. - Transformations are often poorly executed and miss the big transformational objectives (unless, of course, they're run by Oxbow Partners, although this key point was missed in the podcast) All with the caveat that this is from memory on a run. Worth a listen!
"Here we have a lot of mini failures that are mounting. And you see the data on people, internal controls, strategic transformation, planning, and supervision. And you have to wonder, are we going to see another 2008?" So says Tina Mavraki, a former Citigroup trader now portfolio non-executive board director, in the latest episode of Following the Rules. Mavraki and Britt Johnston, a former sales trader now Emea head of conduct and culture at investment bank Natixis, discuss where financial institutions are going wrong in their efforts to address their cultural shortcomings. They detail the practical steps that finance bosses can take to meaningfully improve their organisational culture, and they outline how regulators could best support their efforts. They also explain how such changes - and the cultural improvements deriving from them - can ultimately add value to the businesses embracing them. Valuations are the most important driver of future #stock returns. It’s really simple - - - when something is cheap, it has a better chance of generating attractive returns going forward. When something is expensive, the opposite is true. Thanks to Chris Galeski for having me on the Financial Commute podcast where we talk about the stock market and discuss opportunities outside of stocks where investors are not subject to these expensive starting stock market valuations.
