We extend our appreciation and congratulations to Fred Hunter who retired in May after over 20 years of service! Fred, a certified welder in our Industrial Services Group, was a welcome asset to any project, from steel erection to rigging to even the occasional concrete project. Fred shared his lifetime of experience by teaching, coaching and mentoring many associates. According to Frank Setlak, Executive Vice President, "He was an absolute pleasure to work with, and his absence from our staffing roster & schedule is missed." We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement!

Another creative piece out of the gates for team Umatilla Electric Cooperative. Kudos to Kim Rill for leading the charge on this one, from start to finish! With any creative project, it's important to build a team that is not afraid to try something new, is not afraid to shout out a random idea, is not worried about what their teammate will say or think, because their is mutual respect and care within the room. It's important to build a team that is daring and not afraid to fail. Build a team of people who care for one another, the brand, and their work. Then, provide them the tools they need to succeed and watch them excel. Passion, energy, and a shared vision can take you miles.
For the Ellis family, the cooperative has become more of an extended family than just an employer. Three generations of this local family have dedicated over 40 years to Umatilla Electric Cooperative, embodying the spirit of community and public power. From Monte’s 30 years of service to Matt’s role as a Journeyman Serviceman, their legacy continues to inspire, with the fourth generation ready to follow in their footsteps. Today is Juneteenth. On this day in 1865, the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom. As we commemorate this important day in history, let us reflect on the progress made while recognizing the work that still lies ahead. At Worthington Steel, Our Philosophy guides us to create an inclusive environment for our employees while influencing changes in the communities where we live and work. Let’s keep moving forward together. #Juneteenth #DrivingSteelForward

Sunday, April 28, is Workers’ Memorial Day. It’s a time to remember and honor workers around the world who lost their lives, were injured or became ill on the job. At Newport News Shipbuilding, it is also a reminder to focus on safety in every task – no matter how routine. Technological advances have made shipbuilding safer than it was in the early days of our company, but make no mistake – the industrial environment we work in daily still presents safety challenges. Many of the accidents we see involve repetitive motion, slips, trips and hand injuries. All are preventable with actions such as pre-job stretching, sequencing of work to mitigate hazards and proper housekeeping. We all must commit to building a safe workspace by staying alert and be willing to speak up and ask the extra question to protect ourselves and others. You may have noticed wreaths hanging at shipyard gates this week in honor of Workers’ Memorial Day. I hope they will inspire you to recommit to making good, safe decisions every day. Our nation is depending on us to safely deliver the quality aircraft carriers and submarines the US Navy needs to defend freedom around the world. Even more importantly, our loved ones are counting on us to return home after each shift.
