I have just become Colm Murray MRIAI, and can call myself an architect again, in the formal sense, alongside the informal one. Beyond whatever one may think about the registering issue as a quality assurance or marketing label, I would like to bring to the professional community a sense that 'architecture' (buildings and the people who design them) owes a duty to society. The obverse of this is that architects have a duty to explain the value of architecture to others, and for this to be meaningful, it will not be on the terms that are set by the architectural discourse, but must engage with the social and economic uses to which buildings are put, as well as the environmental consequences of building.
