Over 100 million individuals worldwide face displacement due to conflict, persecution, and violence.   On today’s World Refugee Day, we not only want to recognize the strength and resilience refugees around the world have but also shine a light on the person behind. We want to actively shift the narrative around refugee by sharing their stories and engaging in conversation with them, not just about them.   We at IKEA recognize the significant value that refugees bring to the communities they become a part. Since 2016, we have contributed to a sustainable professional integration of refugees, and have committed to create job opportunities for an additional 3’000 refugees worldwide by the end of 2027.   Another initiative we are very proud to be a part of is the Refugee Speakers Program launched by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. It aims to give refugees a voice and teaches them how to speak in public. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Suceava Coordination We are pleased to share insights from our recent Accommodation Coordination Meeting held in Suceava. This crucial gathering brought together over 20 participants from public institutions, NGOs, and other vital stakeholders dedicated to addressing the ongoing needs of refugees in our community. 🔹 Objective: With the possible closure of the governmental accommodation program, our focus has intensified on identifying sustainable and alternative accommodation options for those most vulnerable among the refugee population. This meeting was a pivotal step in our ongoing efforts to ensure no one is left without a safe place to call home. 🏠 🔹 Collaboration: The spirit of cooperation was palpable as representatives from various sectors worked together, sharing insights and proposing innovative solutions. It's through such collaborative efforts that we can make significant strides towards inclusive support for all. 🤝 🔹 Moving Forward: We discussed a range of potential accommodations and are actively working towards implementing these solutions promptly. Our goal is not only to meet immediate needs but also to foster a welcoming environment that supports the long-term well-being and integration of refugees into local communities. 🌍 We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the participants for their commitment and look forward to our continued partnership. To bridge the connectivity gap for refugees, GSMA joined forces with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the Government of Luxembourg and @International Telecommunications Union to initiate a blueprint for action through the #ConnectivityForRefugees initiative. We know that connectivity is a lifeline for refugees and their hosts, but it's one that too many still can't take for granted. Together we can ensure our connected world leaves no one behind. As part of the #ConnectivityForRefugees initiative, GSMA have published 3 country profiles, which sketch a picture of the connectivity situation for refugees and highlight opportunities for engagement in Ethiopia 🇪🇹, Rwanda 🇷🇼 and South Sudan 🇸🇸.

At the end of 2023, the Global Refugee Forum took place in Geneva. Member states and relevant stakeholders meet every four years to implement the Global Compact for Refugees and discuss necessary policy changes. This conversation has been going on for a few years now, but progress has been slow in shifting power directly to refugees. Much of the resources, decisions, and processes are still controlled by the "big brothers" in the refugee sector. Ishimwe Jean Marie stresses the 3 main things needed for change: 1) Direct funding to refugee led organisations to improve system building in greater impact for their work. 2) A shift in mindset and a shift of power for them to lead the localisation agenda, and the decolonisation of aid with partners. 3) Making sure that refugees are at the seat at the table, not just one seat, but having enough seats to actually influence the refugee regime to be more responsive to refugees themselves.
