Growing up in the heart of Brazil's Cerrado biome, our free school lunches were a celebration of fresh, local flavors. Here's what made them stand out: Universality: Every student eats for free, eliminating stigma and ensuring access for all. Fresh & Seasonal: Menus featured seasonal fruits and vegetables like siriguela, carambola, and pequi – all native to the Cerrado – minimizing processed foods. Cultural Connection: Traditional dishes like "Arroz com pequi e carne de sol" and desserts like “goiabada” connected students to their culinary heritage. Local Sourcing: At least 30% of ingredients come from local, small-scale farms, boosting the regional economy. In contrast, US school lunches often rely on processed foods and face funding challenges.
