Digital health solutions boost efficiency, though ROI is yet to come

Some definite industry ‘heavy hitters’ of which the newly created Digital Health Collaborative is comprised, including the likes of AARP, AHIP, AMA, NCQA and Rock Health. Supported by the Peterson Health Technology Institute that’s infused with $50 million, the aim of the Collaborative - representing the interests of providers, payers, consumer tech, and employers - is to thoroughly evaluate digital solutions that actually work, are equitable and demonstrate an ROI with the ultimate goal of increasing confidence and adoption of solutions supported by evidence-backed research. Our Health Care Strategy (HCS) team at NORC at the University of Chicago regularly partners with various healthcare organizations to conduct research to improve patient care.  In late 2023, on behalf of a provider organization, we assessed perceptions of access and barriers to health care among economically vulnerable individuals, as defined by those who have Medicaid coverage, compared to individuals with commercial health insurance. Utilizing a custom AmeriSpeak panel to assemble focus groups, we also explored how social isolation impacts health system engagement and identified actionable strategies that hospitals and health systems can implement to alleviate the barriers identified by these individuals.
