Interesting article and worth a read. A sample: "Food price inflation is the real elephant in the room. Reducing emissions from farming entails large upfront capex, while environmental goals imply no further expansion of farmland. This puts upward pressure on food prices; [...] Higher prices might incentivize less waste, but without safety nets, a dangerous tradeoff exists between environmental and social goals such as zero hunger by 2030."

Our agrifood systems provide immense value, feeding billions, supporting livelihoods and driving economies, all around the world. Yet they also generate more than 10 trillion dollars in hidden costs every year. These costs reflect damage to the environment, growing social inequalities and the consequences of unhealthy diets. The challenges differ, while some countries suffer from severe environmental damage, others struggle with poverty and hunger. But globally diets lacking in whole grains and fruits and high salt are the leading contributors to health hidden costs. So what can be done? To secure a better future, we need sustainable practices, decent incomes and healthier food choices that fit to local realities. FAO,s 2024 State of Food and Agriculture report shows how governments, business and individuals have all roles to play. Through collaboration. we can align policies, business actions and dietary patterns with urgent need of change. Each one of us can help reshape agrifood systems so that they can nourish both people and the planet. #FAO #AgriFoodSystems #SustainableAgriculture #Biodiversity

Securing the future food chain 🍽️ To match the rapidly growing world’s population, food production will need to increase by over 70% in the next 25 years. 📈 However, the impact of climate change on agriculture and water threatens to reduce crop yields drastically. Are we going to be able to supply protein to the global population? Traditional agriculture is not likely to succeed in a sustainable and resilient way. It is key to look for sustainable alternatives to secure our food chain in the future while protecting our environment. Integrate plant-based source of protein into our alimentation is going to be key to answer the global needs. Phytoplankton can be one of these solutions, providing a greater source of protein and omega 3. In addition to that, its rapid growth, low resource requirements and vital role in carbon sequestration make it a sustainable solution to the challenges facing the world. ❓ Have you started considering adding plant-based solutions in your food routine? Scaling the true cost of food production up to the global level shows the full extent of agri-food's negative externalities. A recent analysis estimated the industry generates negative externalities of USD 15tr every year, the equivalent of 12% of global gross domestic product (2020 PPP). The same analysis estimated that reforming the industry to instead produce positive externalities of USD 5tr a year requires annual investment of between USD 200 – 500bn—a relatively small amount compared to the economic windfall it could create. Find out more about the agri-food industry's intersection with global #sustainability goals, and the solutions to make progress towards them, in the UBS Sustainability and Impact Institute's report: https://lnkd.in/eNjSS6Zg #shareUBS #GrowMoveEat #agriculture #food #nature #climate #TheInstitute
