Why All Nurses Shouldn't Be Confined to Bedside Care (Tales of a Public Health Nurse) - - This story was shared with me by one of my colleagues who is currently practicing as a Public Health Nurse but started out as a Registered Bedside Nurse. “A few years ago, I found myself feeling burnt out and unfulfilled in my role as a bedside nurse. Despite my passion for patient care, the long hours, high patient ratios, and physical demands took a toll on my well-being. I felt stuck, wondering if there was more I could do to make a difference in healthcare. That's when I decided to explore other avenues within nursing. I transitioned into a role in public health, where I had the opportunity to work on community outreach programs and advocate for preventive care initiatives. It was a refreshing change that reignited my passion for nursing. Through my new role, I realized that nursing encompasses a diverse range of specialties and opportunities beyond the hospital walls. From research and education to administration and policy-making, there are countless ways for nurses to contribute to the healthcare system and make a meaningful impact on patient outcomes.” So, why should all nurses not be confined to bedside care? In my opinion, because we have unique skills, knowledge, and perspectives that can be applied in various settings to address healthcare challenges from different angles. By embracing diverse roles, we can drive innovation, improve patient care, and advance the nursing profession as a whole. To be a nurse is to embrace a profound journey of service and sacrifice. It's the sleepless nights spent soothing the pain of others, the relentless pursuit of knowledge to heal the body and mend the spirit. They often sacrifice their own well-being for the sake of their patients. Theirs is a calling of love, empathy, and unyielding dedication, shaping lives with every tender touch and heartfelt smile. But there is something that needs to be addressed—the world needs more of these superheroes. Addressing nursing shortages encompasses more than simply increasing the number of nurses available—it's about ensuring that every nurse is fully prepared for their role. One significant challenge is the experience gap encountered by new graduates, which directly impacts patient care quality. Academic institutions and healthcare facilities must collaborate to bridge this gap. A key aspect of this collaboration is reimagining how clinical skills are taught and developed, aiming to streamline the transition to practice while minimizing redundant efforts. While nothing can replace the value of years of experience, enhancing the preparedness of new nurses is a crucial step forward. Tackling this crisis demands innovative solutions and a comprehensive approach to nurse education and support, ultimately ensuring high-quality care for all patients. There's a disconnect among nurses. I write often about the growing chasm between the Administration and frontline clinical professionals. Nurses who reach out to me continue to express pain and dismay that no one is listening to them in hospital leadership. Nurses continually report facing off with hospital bureaucratic forces that sometimes prioritize profit over patient care. Just like the Ghostbusters battled supernatural entities, nurses combat administrative challenges to ensure quality care for their patients. Where are the CNOs and other nurse leaders in hospitals? When professionals assume a leadership role, there is a duty to perform in the best interest of an organization. Nurse leaders have a fiduciary responsibility to support their nurses to provide safe and respectful patient care. Yet, the reality is nurse leaders are often fiduciary to the organization's financial performance over patient safety. Not only are bedside nurses leaving clinical medicine, but so too are nurse leaders. If we don't have nurses, we don't have access to patient care. No patient care results in service closures, and ultimately hospitals. Deserts of care should be more of a concern in the US than it is. What do you in your current position?: My everyday duties include rooming patients, obtaining vitals, and gathering detailed information from patients that will help the provider understand why the patient is in office. How did you get into your career?: I've always know that I wanted to be a nurse. I enjoy helping and caring for people. My mom is also a nurse and was a great model growing up. The great thing about the nursing field is that there are so many different types of nursing you can choose from. Healthcare is always advancing and changing which is another reason why nursing is a great career, there is always something new to learn. Why did you choose to work at a community health center?: Community is very important to me, and working in the community makes me appreciate things in a different way. One of the issues bedeviling nursing is what I call role discordance. There is a global push for us to be recognised as leaders, policy makers and drivers of healthcare yet paradoxically, there is a culture among nursing teams themselves on what it means to be a nurse. A discordance between what we are asking for and what we are doing to achieve it. Nurses who move away from traditional hospital roles are not seen as being "nurse enough" by fellow nurses. I have twice encountered this on a personal level in my career and it makes me wonder whether we preach water and drown in pints of fermented grapes. What has your experience been as a nurse leader? As a nurse leader, educator and nurse researcher it is important to disseminate the work that we do which impacts nursing, and the healthcare organization as a whole. A Professional Nurse Advancement Program is one intervention medical centers could implement to reinforce the professional role of the bedside nurse and the nurse as a caregiver.
