The #clinicalresearchindustry is multi-faceted. Without knowing this, it can be hard to understand how your skills can transfer for a role. I can use myself as an example. I initially started off bench level in a lab before becoming a care attendant/nursing assistant (depending on where you located). After doing patient care, I decided I wanted to do something else since I had no intention of pursuing a nursing/medical path. That was when I was able to secure an interview for a site level role as a research assistant. This role required me to deal with patients directly in oncology, but not all the time. My primary job was to enter data, schedule biopsies, build kits, request archival tissue, etc. It was those skills from being a care attendant combined with my lab work and degree that helped me secure that position. To develop land that is currently underutilized as well as address workforce needs, a new healthcare education lab will be built in a corridor of Chicago’s Washington Park. As announced two days ago, the facility will connect to a separate learning center affiliated with Malcom X College; the joint projects will support more South Side residents in pursuing healthcare careers. A partnership between the City Colleges of Chicago, the University of Chicago, and UChicago Medicine, the programs will help meet the growing demand by local employers, particularly for clinical lab technicians. Plans for the initiative were guided by community input: Residents of the surrounding area—where unemployment and poverty rates have been at 21 percent and 47 percent respectively (compared to 10 and 17 percent citywide)—specifically prioritized workforce development opportunities. Why leave a million-dollar job? 18 years ago, this decision changed my life: I walked away from my law career, even though it afforded me a rich lifestyle. Why? A) I was missing out on time with my young kids. ❤️ B) Despite doing pro bono work, I felt I wasn't doing enough to better the world. Ross Stromberg, a Jones Day healthcare lawyer, showed me the struggles of low-income US families in dental care. This could be solved by establishing a brick-and-mortar surgery center. So, I took charge of making the Pediatric Dental Initiative Surgery Center a reality. – Built and grew the center to serve 30+ counties, covering over half of California. – Treating 27,000+ children & young adults with special needs. Now, as CEO of Pacific Vision Foundation, I'm solving another health crisis: Provide eye care to farm workers, immigrants and the elderly from California and Nevada. Impact: – Open 2d operating rooms in new surgery center, treating more than twice as many patients. – Plan pediatric clinic and reopen Low Vision Clinic. – Support CPMC Residency Program Sutter Health/Lions Eye Foundation training future eye doctors and providing access to clinic care.
