A new #CISA / #FBI advisory provides detailed threat intelligence on ALPHV Blackcat #ransomware as a service (RaaS) and recommended actions to reduce the likelihood of a successful ransomware attack. These recommended actions are important for all types of ransomware attacks. If you are having difficulty securing the budget to perform these actions, you might consider performing a quantitative risk analysis showing the financial impact of a major revenue generating business process disrupted by a ransomware attack. Use a cyber risk quantification (CRQ) methodology in which your organization's currently deployed controls (people, processes, and technologies) and attack paths are integral to the CRQ simulation software. Threat intelligence is also important for CRQ analysis. But industry information will suffice if you do not have company-specific information.   This will enable you to show how these actions improve your organization's cyber posture, i.e., reduce the likelihood of a successful ransomware attack, and directly connect that to the financial analysis. In other words, you will be able to compare the status quo to the future state where these four actions are routinely performed. Here are CSA / FBI recommended actions: 1. Routinely take inventory of assets and data to identify authorized and unauthorized devices and software. 2. Prioritize remediation of known exploited vulnerabilities. 3. Enable and enforce multifactor authentication with strong passwords. 4. Close unused ports and remove applications not deemed necessary for day-to-day operations.
