I was catching up on #Hacks this weekend and in watching Martha Kelley guest star as the HR person, I was reminded that for so long 𝐇𝐑 has been depicted as the 𝐚𝐰𝐤𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞-𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐨 who only has the company's best interest at heart. In looking up rules around maternity leave, paid leave, time off, benefits, etc. the focus for so long has been 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 -- not what should the company do to be 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞𝐬. I want to give Ronda G. McCoy, CPA, MBA a huge shout-out at LCvista because she's one of the only finance people who has ever said to me "I know we can offer different things by state, but I want to be fair to every single employee at our company. Why should we differ a policy only because CA protects its workers more?" SO here's to 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐔𝐌𝐀𝐍 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 and making sure that HR people know all the policies and regulations by state, but that they also think about the employee first. Your HR person should be the person everyone in the company comes to when they have a problem because they know they'll have their back. And here's the deal, if you treat your people well you won't have to be so worried about lawsuits for not following protocol... If you're interested in learning more about how we help companies in this way, reach out to Dyana Rojas who is leading our #HR Support and Embedded People work here at HigherPeople. #HR #peoplematter #culture #talent #bestpractices

Thinking about hiring a temp or seasonal employee for the summer to help your team finish off the summer strong? Bringing on temporary or seasonal employees can have many benefits for your business, especially during the busy summer months. Whether you need extra help with a seasonal rush or special project, hiring temporary staff can provide the support you need without the long-term commitment. But have you considered how hiring temporary employees can impact your Colorado unemployment account? It's important to understand the implications so you can make informed decisions for your business. When you hire temporary or seasonal employees, it can impact your unemployment account in a few ways. If the employee is only working for a short period of time, they may not be eligible for unemployment benefits once their assignment is complete. This can help keep your unemployment insurance costs down. However, if you regularly hire temporary or seasonal employees and they are eligible for unemployment benefits, it could potentially increase your unemployment insurance costs. It's important to track the hours worked by temporary employees and report them accurately to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment to ensure your account reflects the correct information. Overall, hiring temp or seasonal employees can be a great way to meet your business needs during the summer months. Just be sure to consider the impact on your Colorado unemployment account so you can make the best decisions for your business. #SummerStaffing #TemporaryEmployees #ColoradoUnemployment #SmallBusinessTips#PEO#staffscapes

Can you find a job without getting hired? More than a third of all workers are finding opportunities outside the traditional employer-employee relationship. And for people over 60, the number rises to more than half and grows higher with advancing age. Why? Part of it is because ageism continues to influence workplace decisions. Older workers are often the first to go in a layoff and the last to be hired back. But it’s also because of the flexibility and control that #independentwork enables. People want and need to continue to work as they get older. Fortunately, that’s increasingly possible as the structure of the labor force shifts away from traditional employment. But what’s driving this shift? What are the pros and cons? And what options are best for #olderworkers? Join Chris Farrell, chief economics contributor to Marketplace, heard weekdays on NPR, and author of Purpose and a Paycheck, and a panel of people who have chosen a non-traditional pathway to finding work, to learn the answers to these questions. This should be an interesting and needed event to help with the logjam of over-50 workers caught in an ageism trap in the traditional job market. There needs to be more innovative approaches to 'work' for sure, and, equally importantly, pushing the data out to employers to raise awareness and open minds, because the data now exists confirming the value age 50+ workers can bring. See you there
