In December 2022, the National Fair Housing Alliance served as the canary in the coal mine when testifying before the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance on the need to move forward with the #BuildBackBetter Act's housing provisions. If the United States Senate supported the House's passed legislation, including $150 billion to support sensible programs, today's fair and affordable housing crisis could have been averted. Yet, the budgets of everyday people continue to be squeezed by skyrocketing housing costs in rental and homeownership. Housing remains a major driver of inflation, and the data shows its impact is not set to subside until the end of 2024 and beyond. Low housing inventory, record competition from corporate investors, exclusionary zoning ordinances, high interest rates, and more are all driving prices higher. Deflationary efforts taken by the Federal Reserve Board have not driven down the cost of housing and mortgage interest rates continue to rise. And Federal Reserve Chair Powell recently stated lowering inflation is "not assured." Thus, Congress and The White House must act quickly on comprehensive legislation to make equitable housing investments that promote financial inclusion and stimulate economic growth for everyone. Sensible solutions like the Housing Crisis Response Act, Downpayment Toward Equity Act, Ending Homelessness Act, and other measures like the Neighborhood Homes Investment Act with fair housing principles are needed to deliver relief the American people deserve. If Congress acts there will be significant resources to: ✔ Increase the number of Housing Choice Vouchers and stop landlords from discriminating based on source of income and veterans' status; ✔ Fund first-generation downpayment assistance for potential first-time homebuyers who lack family wealth enter into homeownership, ✔ Support both supply and demand solutions to address the nation's fair and affordable housing crisis; and ✔ Support the renovation and development of 500,000 homes for owner-occupancy to revitalize distressed urban, rural, and suburban communities. The cherry on top is that these policies will create thousands of jobs and generate billions in local revenues, which strengthens the economy for everyone. Forward thinking states like Minnesota, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and North Carolina are already implementing some of these solutions. Congress can follow their lead and remove barriers that stymie progress and center housing as the path to restorative justice and inclusive growth. All children in the UK have their own personal allowance, currently £12,570. There are special rules if a parent gifts significant amounts of money to their children which results in them receiving bank interest of more than £100 (before tax) annually. If this is the case, the parent is liable to pay tax on all the interest if it is above their own Personal Savings Allowance (PSA). These anti-avoidance laws are designed to prevent a child’s personal allowance being used by parents of children aged under 18, with some minimal exceptions. #ChildrensSavings #SavingsAndTax
