We applaud Arkansas Governor Sarah Sanders and the new executive order issued aimed at tackling the state's maternal and infant health crisis. This is a commendable step towards the overall goal of healthy moms and healthy babies. The creation of the Arkansas Strategic Committee for Maternal Health and the immediate actions outlined in the order demonstrate a proactive approach to addressing this critical issue. By fostering collaboration between policymakers, health care professionals and community stakeholders, we can implement effective solutions that improve accessibility, affordability, adoptability and quality in health care. Strengthening Primary Health Care is the only way to address our abysmal and many deteriorating vital health indicators related to family planning, maternal and child health, communicable and non-communicable diseases, and mental health. By not addressing these issues effectively we are endangering our future. Hence it is as much a national security issue as any traditional national security consideration. Absolutely No 2 ways about this . We need effective advocacy for Primary Care at multiple levels. We need Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) with Leadership skills to come forward- We need unified voice -a strong platform to support PCPs. No politics, no hidden agendas. The Imperative of Prioritizing Children's Health As guardians of the next generation, it is our paramount responsibility to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of our children. However, our diverse backgrounds and approaches to healthcare can sometimes compromise their health. In some communities, homemade medications are often the initial treatment for childhood illnesses, which can be cost-effective and accessible but also potentially hazardous if not used judiciously. According to the World Health Organization (approximately 6.3 million children under the age of 15 die annually from preventable diseases, highlighting the need for vigilant monitoring and timely interventions. A balanced approach that integrates traditional practices with modern medical care can optimize health outcomes for our children. In a recent Research in Practice Blog post, Clinical Futures' experts Dr. Aditi Vasan and Dr. George Dalembert provide guidance for addressing racism throughout the intervention development and implementation cycle through a conceptualized antiracist framework. This framework encourages policy makers and pediatric health systems to be mindful of the various types of racism that may underlie policies and practices to guide improvements focused on better and more equitable health outcomes.
