I have extended the application period for this important and cool gig until 10/26 (wanted it to be open longer from the start - sometimes the HR process is confusing!). This person will not only supervise an amazing and talented team of engineers and scientists doing rad water-data science work, but they will serve in leadership capacity to the FUTURE of the water data ecosystem for all of our vast, CA water data and water resource management issues. Who would be be interested? 1. People who strongly believe in transparent, functional, responsive and progressive government. Government programs naturally protect their data and resist publication of it as open data. "It needs to be explained." "It's not of good quality." "It takes work to make it available and that's not our priority right now." These are all valid, but if you like to use your judo to help government do better, you will love this job. 2. People who want to advance equity. The work we are doing right now (and for the foreseeable future) centers equity. Why, you may ask? Because historically government has taken it's direction and priority from those in power with access (time to lobby, etc.) to our processes. In the mid to late 20th century, when our agency was created, this power center had motives that we now see as unjust, inequitable and deserving some attention to rectify. Data is powerful. This work is contentious, hard, and super, super rewarding. 3. People who like partnering and kindness. What? An engineering / data job that might be appealing to humans who value kindness and communicating clearly and partnering? This work - both the data ecosystem repair, improvement and modernization work and the equity, community centered work - is 75% or more people work. The magic comes when you mix the data, engineering, water resource principles and management work with the human or people work. Are you interested? Do you know someone who can do this magic? Who else loves a good murder mystery? 10 things I love about my job: #3 I get to be a detective 🕵🏼♀️ Exploring, investigating, challenging, looking for clues, gathering evidence, questioning the involved parties, then exploring motive(motivation) and finally wrapping up the case. There are not many things as satisfying as that. Luckily mostly there is no violence involved in data wrangling. 😦🔫🩸 And for all the posts where we are speaking on stage, professing big insights or displaying new methods, we (market researchers) spend so much of our time in detective mode, to get to that point of beautiful delivery. I'm happy to share that I completed my first data analysis and visualization assignment for Portland Clean Air. This is the first professional data gig I've taken on, and it thankfully set a high bar to what I'm willing to give my screentime to for money. It has a purpose beyond pay which I believe in whole-heartedly, which is the only variety of work I seek to engage in. The cost of cancer treatments and other associated diseases caused by diesel exhaust to those with chronic exposure (environmentally marginalized people) isn't priced into diesel fuel and petrochemical barons don't often give all their wealth away to solve the health problems their products and production systems cause. This is important work to stop and prevent suffering and early deaths, save a bit of tax money, and strengthen the economy in a sustainable direction, so please give a second to look... https://lnkd.in/gPiUzpx5 My intention is making professional quality data analysis with the power of Python affordable and available for local nonprofits doing some of the most important work, preventing anthropogenic disease from common-pool resource pollution and aiding marginalized ecologies, when the academic calendar allows for it. Nonprofits and scientists are welcome to connect and book my time, yet I'm not pursuing any jobs so that academic opportunities I may encounter can be pursued.

'I still have people call me and say, 'Hey, do you know that your name is a bird name?'" laughs Carla Dove.  Fair enough. As the director of the Feather Identification Lab at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., Dove does spend all day, every day thinking about birds- doves included. Similarly, Greg Pond works as an aquatic biologist, sampling water bodies of the U.S. Northeast for the Environmental Protection Agency. 'My path is water, and all the things that live in it,' says Pond. 'And of course, growing up people sometimes gave me the nickname of Pondscum.' Pond and Dove are what's known as aptonyms, or people with names that fit their careers. Historically speaking, being an aptonym (sometimes spelled aptronym) probably would have been much more common than it is today. After all, last names such as Baker, Barber, Butler, and many other surnames originally grew out of a person or family's occupation. Today though, Americans especially have more options for work than ever before. So it strikes us a s noteworthy when a name just seems to suit a person's career path perfectly. 'Occasionally I find out that some people think I changed my name because I was so thrilled with my career,' says Betsy Weatherhead, an award-winning atmospheric scientist who has served on NOAA's Scientific Advisory Group. 'And that's just not the case.' But all of this does bring up an interesting question- can a person's name influence the trajectory of their life?"
