As a business analyst you can often become pigeonholed as ONLY a business analyst. But think about what a business analyst does. We come into an organisation and learn a huge amount about how that business operates. Your processes, your systems, your strategy, your policies, your data, your stakeholders. As a role, we probably know more about how your business operates that most of your staff who aren't senior managers. So, as a hiring manager, if you get an application from someone for an operational role who has been a business analyst for a long time, look at their background. Look at where they worked, the projects the worked on, the size of the engagements, and really consider what they were responsible for. A business operates on processes, data, systems, and people, which are the key elements of business analysis, and a lot of what we do is transferrable, which is just as well, because not all of us want to be business analysts forever.
