A passanger once asked me, WHY DID YOU NOT BECOME A PILOT? During one of my flights, a passenger inquired with a curious look, "You seem so passionate about aviation. Why did you decide to become cabin crew instead of a pilot?" Handing him a warm cup of masala tea, I replied, "Sir, before joining, I understood that this role demanded much more than serving refreshments. It involves managing diverse people and situations, including emergencies. I felt confident in taking on such responsibilities. As cabin crew, we undergo rigorous training for onboard emergencies, medical situations, and aircraft safety. I felt to take charge of such responsibilities, which has boosted my confidence significantly. Moreover, it has taught me the importance of patiently handling every scenario. Secondly, I am a person who loves helping others and understanding their concerns. At the end of the day, even if I am merely serving food and water, I am indirectly receiving blessings. Trust me, I have had numerous people bless me by placing their hand on my head, expressing gratitude. Helping people is no longer just a duty, it has now become my nature & fundamental trait in my core being. One of the reasons I cherish this job is the opportunity to treat passengers like family. Welcoming elderly on board reminds me of my grandparents. I made sure they got served first with their choice of complimentary meal and enjoyed chatting with them over a cup of masala chai whenever I could. The Importance of Caring Deeply and Effective Communication One of Magellan Jets' core values is caring deeply. Shortly after I started, Anthony Tivnan one of our Founders and President gave me some invaluable advice: "Remember, we are dealing with two things that are not perfect...People and Planes. There will be mistakes and mechanical issues that will cause delays or cancellations of flights. Your success or failure in this business will be based on how you communicate and handle these situations." Last week, I received a call from a family looking to leave Nantucket on a private jet after being fogged in on Sunday. After booking their trip, I decided it would be a good idea to take the ferry to the island first thing in the morning to see them off on their first flight with Magellan Jets. However, things didn't go as planned. The first jet had an issue and had to be grounded. By the time I arrived on the island, the second option also had a mechanical issue, and we were now searching for our third option. Despite these setbacks, I kept the family updated regularly and worked tirelessly to find a solution. Before heading back on the ferry, the client looked at me and said, "The fact that you took the time to come over to the island, kept us updated regularly, and worked so hard on our behalf...we will never fly with anyone else." Receiving this feedback in their post-flight survey (pictured below) was incredibly rewarding. This is a perfect score! This experience reaffirmed the importance of both caring deeply and effective communication, especially in challenging situations. It's not just about providing a service; it's about showing our clients that we genuinely care about their experience and are committed to making it the best it can be. From Fear to Flight - True Story of a Middle Class Kid Reflecting back on my first flight experience, I can't help but reminisce about the mixture of emotions I felt as a lower middle-class kid boarding an airplane for the very first time. It was a moment filled with both excitement and fear, as I got on a journey that was not only a personal milestone but also a source of immense pride for my family and community. Growing up, the idea of traveling by air seemed like a distant dream, reserved for those with more privilege. So, when the opportunity presented itself, I embraced it with a smile on my face, despite the inner turmoil of fear and nervousness. I remember the uncertainty I felt as I navigated the airport, unsure of how to obtain my boarding pass or properly fasten my seatbelt. The fear of the unknown compounded with the anxiety of whether flying was truly safe. Arriving at the airport three hours before departure became a ritual, driven by the fear of missing my flight. As the aircraft ascended into the sky, my heart raced with a mixture of excitement and sheer terror. The unfamiliar sensation of being airborne left me in a state of shock, questioning whether I had made the right decision to take to the skies. However, as the flight smoothly landed at its destination, I made a vow to myself never to board a plane again, convinced that train travel was a safer and more comfortable option. But life has a way of surprising us. Fast forward to today, and I find myself constantly traversing the skies, embracing the very mode of transportation that once filled me with fear and doubt. Each flight is now an opportunity for growth, a chance to conquer my fears and expand my horizons. Looking back, I realize that my journey from fear to flight parallels the broader journey of life. It's about confronting our fears, pushing past our comfort zones, and embracing the unknown with courage and resilience. So to anyone who has ever felt the same apprehension about flying, know that you are not alone. And remember, it's okay to feel scared, but it's what you do in spite of that fear that truly defines your journey. Embrace the unknown, spread your wings, and soar to new heights.
