You can do double good

What is the value of ”Take Your Daughter to Work Day? We think it is education and empathy, so the child knows what the parent does daily, but it is so much more. It instills lifelong work values. Meahgan Gibson attended a “Take Your Daughter to Work Day” at Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. To this day she reminds me of a few choice words I stated during a staff meeting but she also pursued a career in Leisure and Hospitality. More importantly she picked up values like; everybody is critical to success (especially the lowest paid hourly associates), every person has a story, treat people with dignity and respect, and if they have a name tag, user their name. Grow by trying new things that others shy away from. Powerful words are “thank you” and “can you help me”, and assisting others even if you do not have time.  Today this was in my feed. I had no idea she was working on this.  Biscuits and socks, who knew? But more importantly, a young professional (from a generation many professionals belittle) leading a project that reflects well on the brand and does good for the community. Also hats off to Dennis Pfaff, Maple Street Biscuit Company and Cracker Barrel for creating an organization culture where young professional growth occurs. Take your daughter to work and as a leader, your relationships matter more than you know. #cio #leadership

Always respond to generosity with gratitude - no matter the amount. One of my alltime favorite fundraising memories: I received a call out of the blue in the month of March from a woman wanting to donate 30 gently used stuffed animals. Did our organization need stuffed animals at the moment? No. But could I find a creative way to get stuffed animals to kids? Sure, but it would take some extra work on my part. So, despite a part of me that thought it would be a waste of time, I said, "Thank you so much for your generosity. We'd be honored to take your stuffed animals. Let me know when you'll be dropping them off. We'll help you unload them from your car". The donation dropoff happened, we expressd our gratitude, and then we moved on. Fast forward to November of the same year. While looking through the daily donation report, I noticed a $50,000 first time gift from a brand new donor. But the name seemed familiar. Then it clicked. It was the stuffed animal woman. I immediately called her to thank her for her donation and to find out what motivated her gift. I'll never forget her answer: "I tried to donate those stuffed animals to several organizations before I offered them to yours. They all turned me down. I knew that the organization who was grateful for my smaller gift was the one I could trust with my larger gift". The point? In principle: Receiving generosity with gratitude is always right. In practice: Develop a robust stewardship process that ensures every donor always receives some sort of recognition for their gift. It's National Philanthropy Day!  While we can all agree that every day should be National Philanthropy Day, this is a great day to reflect on charity. Below are a few ideas: 1.    Imagine a world without charities. No charities helping animals, children, curing diseases, taking care of people in difficult circumstances. Take a minute on National Philanthropy Day to thank yourself for supporting causes you care about in the past – and plan what you can do for them in the future. 2.    Sit down and write out the causes and the charities you support and why you choose to support them. This can be a powerful reminder of the difference you are making to these great causes!! 3.    Write down a few ideas for how you can support these charities this week, this month and in the future. Get excited about your philanthropy!!
