Finally! Japan got its stable launch vehicle #H3. ✌ #Japan successfully launched the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-4 #DAICHI-4 🛰 in LEO from #Tanegashima Space Center onboard #H3 rocket 🚀. It was imperative for the two-stage #H3 medium-lift workhorse to pass its upper-stage engine ignition issues built jointly by JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency & Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. DAICHI-4 is capable of data collection for disaster response, mapmaking, and security tasks like monitoring military activities, missile launches, IR surveying, etc. The monitoring range is much wider than its predecessor ALOS-2.

In particular, SpaceX has become central by deploying #Starlink in #Ukraine and by providing several services to the US military. 🇪🇺 Concurrently, the #EU signed a contract with SpaceX to launch its Galileo satellites, and concluded a parallel security agreement with the US. 🌌🛰️🙌 True Anomaly has partnered with Firefly Aerospace to facilitate three autonomous orbital vehicle launch missions for the United States Space Force’s Victus Haze program. In an article published today by Aviation Week Network, citing a new report by Seraphim Space, I explain why 2023 was a busy year for the space economy, despite the broader slowdown seen in VC funding. Some excerpts below: North America continues to be the top destination for space tech investment, receiving more than three times that of No. 2 Asia. About 40% of Asia’s space funding was focused on early-stage companies given that the region is a newer market than North America. While deal volume in Asia is beginning to approach that of the U.S., overall investment remains significantly lower. One of Asia’s most notable deals last year was the Chinese launch startup Galactic Energy Aerospace Technology raising $154 million from heavyweight state investors in a Series C round that closed in December. Galactic Energy wants to win contracts to launch satellites for Guowang, China’s national satellite internet megaconstellation that is widely viewed as Beijing’s answer to SpaceX’s Starlink. China has lofty aspirations for Guowang, under which it plans to send about 13,000 satellites into low Earth orbit. Another key Asian deal was the Japanese company Astroscale securing up to $80 million from the Japanese government that it will use to fund its space sustainability initiatives. On its official website, the company says it aims “to create sustainable space systems and mitigate the growing and hazardous buildup of debris in space.” Looking ahead to 2024, the space economy is expected to continue thriving given its unique value proposition. “Space is in many ways insulated from the economic cycles affecting the broader VC landscape, as it holds long-term strategic importance,” Seraphim said in the report.
