Toolkit Tuesday – At Home This is a take on a classic worry box but a way to build self esteem (very low in ADHDers) by continuing the feeling of connection with the caregiver even if they are not emotionally or physically available for the child in the moment. It is imperative, for this to work, that you do make time to answer the notes when you are ready. Make the container themed to your child’s special interest. Just as the house is ready to get down to sleep this is the time her ADHD brain wakes up! Full of questions and wonder. Instead of getting angry at her love language and aim for connection (i.e. wanting to wake me up!) I designed her a special jar that she can pop all of her thoughts and questions on a note pad and save them for me for the morning. This way she has her questions answered but at a time that suits me, she feels heard. This works well for her because she likes writing and note making. It is a take on a worry jar/monster but she can pop anything on the notes. It is important to match the tool to the childs learning style (this wouldn’t work for my son).
