🌿 On April 26th, the online event 'Bringing cleantech innovation to market' hosted by the Observatory on Patents and Technology at the European Patent Office (EPO) was focused on a study about the #cleantech #commercialisation and the trends about this topic for the next few years. ⏳ While the European Union (EU) with its Green Deal aims to reduce #greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, the target depends on the early adoption of #innovations in clean technologies. In collaboration with the European Investment Bank (EIB), the event showed a new economic study shedding light on the challenges faced by companies aiming to bring clean #technologies to the forefront. 🎯 Explaining the results of the survey, it was discussed that:  - The costs of such technologies will go lower and lower to the point that we won’t need policy, the market will do the job. Nevertheless, the current state calls for #policy #action; - #Inventions need to be scalable to go to the market. Scalability should be considered at the early stage of the #development; - Policy #support for the early stage of innovation is lacking, we are focusing mainly on #acceleration; - The presence of innovation players is still missing; - We would need the mobilisation of the government with #public #guarantees. 👩🔬 In other topics, it was mentioned that the role of IP to attract #funding is pivotal. To hold a patent increases the likelihood of receiving a grant or #investments from the VC and, for this reason, it is important to raise awareness of IP. 💶 Finally, according to the study, EU has the majority of the assets in the sector of Cleantech and a big #perspective of #growth, but a concrete plan is needed. In recent years, a lot of funds have been allocated for various innovations, but no actual aid funds have been created for the manufacturing sector, and this is the sector that in the future will produce/fabricate the technology. 🔗 Interested? On 22 July 2024, SMART participated in the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) Symposium, which focused on decarbonisation and how disruptive technologies could help reduce carbon emissions for a sustainable future. The event featured keynote sessions, research presentations, and a panel discussion on topics like biochemical and chemical transformations, hydrogen utilisation, and artificial intelligence/modelling. SMART Governing Board Member Professor Richard Lester presented a segment titled "Research Universities and the Climate Challenge: Science and Solutions for Life in a Changing World", where he highlighted the critical role of research universities in combating climate change and the need for the rapid implementation of policies and technologies. Researchers from SMART's Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Critical Analytics for Manufacturing Personalized-Medicine (CAMP) interdisciplinary research groups showcased their innovative research work during the poster sessions.
