MEDICAL NEWS: Martha’s Rule - A New NHS Patient Safety Policy A new NHS patient safety policy, titled 'Martha's Rule' is set to be introduced following the death of 13 year old Martha Mills who died in 2021 at King's College Hospital in London. During her time in King’s, despite her parents raising concerns about her deteriorating condition with staff, Martha developed sepsis. The policy is set to be adopted via a phased approach, and will begin with at least 100 adult and paediatric acute provider sites, which already offer a 24/7 critical care outreach facility. There are three elements to the new policy, as per the NHS website, as follows: 1-All staff in NHS trusts must have 24/7 access to a rapid review from a critical care outreach team, who they can contact should they have concerns about a patient. 2-All patients, their families, carers, and advocates must also have access to the same 24/7 rapid review from a critical care outreach team, which they can contact via mechanisms advertised around the hospital, and more widely if they are worried about the patient’s condition. 3-The NHS must implement a structured approach to obtain information relating to a patient’s condition directly from patients and their families at least daily. In the first instance, this will cover all inpatients in acute and specialist trusts. Special features for special areas of applications The displays are available long-term and insensitive to radiation effects due to their metal housing. For particularly aggressive environments, Humisil encapsulation is available to protect sensitive conductive tracks and product parts against corrosion. Effective LEDs with low waste heat and integrated converters are also used. Another advantage is the Haptivity® technology: Thanks to the haptic feedback, nothing stands in the way of simple and safe operation of the touch screen. Unintentional adjustment is therefore impossible. The displays are available in the long term: "Especially for devices that are subject to official approval, the long-term availability of the components is essential. Kyocera is a specialist for high-quality displays with long life cycles. Some products have been in use for more than ten years", Eberhard Schill, Manger Marketing and Distribution at KAS explains. Each display can be ordered now. Kyocera additionally offers technical support with the implementation in already existing devices. #kyoceradisplays #medicaldevices

🛌 The Vital Role of Crew Rest in Patient Transport A crucial aspect that often goes overlooked: the importance of crew rest. While patient-centric care is paramount and is often dependent on the well-being of the medical team. Exhaustion and lack of sleep can significantly impact performance, leading to potential risks for both the crew and patients. We highlight the importance of a good rest before a mission. The ripple effect of an exhausted medical team can compromise patient safety. It’s essential to balance our commitment to patient care with self-care to ensure optimal performance. We recognise that the fast-paced nature of medical transport often pushes teams to their limits. Therefore, addressing crew rest and establishing protocols to manage it effectively is critical. Let’s work together to prioritise the health of our medical teams to provide the best possible care for our patients. #CrewRest #PatientSafety #HealthcareProfessionals
