WHY MEDAIR? Imagine a hungry, malnourished young boy in a community hit by crisis. Why is he malnourished? Is it simply a lack of food, or are there underlying health problems that make it worse? Is unsafe drinking water making him sick? Does he have adequate shelter? Does his family know about the life-saving importance of hand-washing or breastfeeding? The threats facing people in crisis are usually complex and interconnected. Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) has played a crucial role in our lives, providing a simple and effective solution for rehydration. In 1975, the UNICEF and the WHO joined forces to establish a single formula rehydration solution. This formula was designed to be suitable for patients of all ages regardless of the cause of diarrhea. As a result, UNICEF began procuring and distributing standard ORS packets.   Since its introduction, ORS has made significant progress in saving lives, particularly among infants and children. Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) which consists of a mixture of salt, sugar, and water, has proven to be a magical formula, especially in low and middle-income countries where access to ORS packets may be limited.   On WORLD ORS Day let's look at some statistics to understand its importance better and spread awareness about this life-saving therapy. We all know that drinking water is good for us. It helps keep your skin radiant gets you energized and aids in digestion. And because it does so many good things to your body it also helps with overall healthy aging. Niti Patel, MS, RD, a dietitian based in New York City, explains that drinking water and aging are linked. "Water is in all of our cells she says and those cells need water to work efficiently. From lubricating your joints to pumping blood to your muscles you need water to perform nearly every bodily function. Depending on your activity level and any chronic conditions your water intake needs may decrease as you age.
