This week, we had the pleasure of conducting a lessons-learned office site visit with During the meeting, we discussed the extraordinary level of detail, collaboration, and planning required to execute the fine details of a thoughtful design. When designing and installing these openings, every aspect must be considered. For instance, each wood plank is carefully laid out to ensure a complete plank at the edge of each window. The window system sills are designed and installed to conceal the track with the finish flooring material, while also allowing proper drainage for any water that enters. In one of these project, we have large sliders meeting at a cantilever corner with massive glass transoms above. These cantilevers necessitate large structural beams, and when the glass is installed, the beams may settle up to 1/2". Sienna Glass, during installation, accounts for this movement by placing sandbags on the beam to determine the exact amount of settling once additional loads are applied. Executing a great design involves a myriad of details, numerous drawings from architects, engineers, manufacturers, and installers. Above all, it requires an incredible team coming together to flawlessly execute a design. Pro Tip Monday – How office fronts connect to the soffit or ceiling is critical. If not planned properly, it can be an expensive change order that may result in a look that was not intended. Three questions to ask in the beginning of the project so the partition installation at the end of the project goes smoothly and as intended. 1.    Is there any special blocking that is needed for the Architectural wall? 2.    Is there any special width to the soffit that is needed for your walls (and don’t forget) type door? 3.    Does the manufacturer have a cut sheet the GC can use in building soffits? Fire can be a designer's worst enemy or best friend. Here's why: Designs that promote safety can also improve aesthetics. Yes, you'll have a well-designed, modern structure – but it's no good if it burns down. But don't worry! Here are a few fire safety measures you can incorporate into your design: 1. Situate stairways near fire escapes. 2. Ensure stairs are wide enough for fast, safe evacuation. 3. Use fire-retardant materials whenever possible. 4. Place smoke detectors strategically throughout the building. 5. Install sprinkler systems. 6. Avoid storing large combustibles. If unavoidable, separate them using fire barriers. 7. Install other fire protection systems as required by the legislation. Think of a fire outbreak as the perfect test of design: Can it save lives and preserve beautiful architecture? So don't compromise fire safety for aesthetics. Instead, merge them for the perfect design.

We’re close to completion on our contract with GTA Interior at a 5 floor commercial office premises in Brighton, where all windows and doors are being replaced to upgrade the building as part of a full refurbishment. Structura are proud to win contracts like this, where sustainability is key to the retrofit spec. All glass is being responsibly recycled and where possible, materials are re-used. As is often the case, it's mostly about the prep. The team begin by safely extracting the dated glazing and framework, then increasing the opening and cleaning it up for the new unit. This Aluprof system requires the EPDM to be attached directly to the frame as opposed to the opening. Once this is in place, lugs are fitted, then the unit is ready to be installed. The frame then sits over the cill pressing which is already installed along the bottom edge of the opening. After some accuracy checks and minor adjustments with packers, the unit it ready for the next steps. The membrane is sealed using specialist adhesive which is made smooth on the surface and rolled flat wherever possible for best adhesion, followed by the lugs being mechanically fixed in place. Along the top of these units, insulation is required and sealed under the membrane before lugs are attached. After this process is complete and all adhesive is dry, the team will trim back any excess materials to make good for the plastering contractor. What you can’t see in this video is the vapour barrier which is added before the original timber internal windowsill is re-instated… and of course, the new glazing! #ukconstruction #windows #glazing #sustainableconstruction #sustainability #Aluprof #aluminium
