(Part 4) We've reached the last few insights from the CompTIA tech jobs report for December 2023. This will be a pretty short post, as really the last page consists of things we've already discussed, but visualized. Report for reference: - https://lnkd.in/e6xzryWX First, the top five states for tech job postings were: - California (~14,000) - Texas (~12,000) - Virginia (~9,000) - Illinois (~5,600) - Florida (~5,500) From November to December, each of these states had a decrease of over 1,000 postings with Texas taking the lead at a loss of ~3,200 postings. Only four states had an increase in tech-related job postings: - Alaska (409) - Rhode Island (104) - Delaware (94) - South Dakota (47) As expected from the rest of the data provided throughout this week, the number of new postings is quite small. Interestingly, in terms of metropolitan areas, Washington D.C. had ~10,700 postings, meaning if DC was a state, it would have been number 3 on the top states list. It also only suffered a loss of ~870 job postings, which is better than anything in the top 6 on the states list. This isn't necessarily significant, because most states represent multiple cities, but I just thought it was a fun stat. Only two major metropolitan areas had increases in tech job postings: - Pittsburgh (1,214 -> +88 from November) - Providence (813 -> +53 from November) It's worth noting, though, that CompTIA only included metro areas with more than 500 tech job postings. The top industries for tech job posts was Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services, with 37,734 job postings attributed to this industry. In my opinion, this isn't super accurate, because it sounds more like several different industries lumped into one category. There is an industry spotlight section, where Manufacturing seems to be experiencing some growth in getting more tech employees. So what does all this mean? I won't be posting my final takeaway until tomorrow (gotta milk the algorithm) but for now, I think, like CompTIA mentioned in their press release, at first glance there are a lot of mixed signals about hiring in tech right now. You can see all throughout the platform people who are having a very rough time of it getting a job in tech right now. But there's always more to it than "nobody's hiring". Could it be their resume? Are they applying for jobs they're not qualified for? Or is it that the economy for tech employees really is just that bad? I don't claim to have all the answers, these are just my observations and my opinions. What are your thoughts? That's what I really want to know.

Recognizing Business Impact: Lesson from the Field, a Personal Story Years ago, early in my career, I was called to fix a server issue for a government job agency. It was my first encounter with the operating system (SCO), and the stakes were high. The server I needed to repair was the one and only, central to an office where hundreds of job seekers relied on it for registering, updating skills, or receiving job offers. When I arrived, I was met with an anxious crowd. The office staff informed us that getting the server back online was critical. With no internet, we had 30 minutes to respond—there was no room for hesitation. Looking back, I realized that understanding business impact goes beyond just resolving technical issues. Business impact isn’t just measured by how many servers or business users are affected. It’s also about seeing the the human element—and responding with a sense of responsibility and urgency. It demands empathy. #BusinessImpact #Empathy #Responsibility

The retrenchment risk affecting permanent employees remains at very high levels, and with companies reacting to difficult times by implementing efficiency programs and cost-cutting exercises unfortunately the outlook is that retrenchments will continue. However, every cloud has a silver lining. Did you know that the independent contractor market is booming, because to keep delivery engines purring companies are replacing employees with a flexible workforce. If you have been retrenched, have you considered working as an independent contractor? If not, why not, given that contracting opportunities are plentiful.
