David Keller leads a group at SRI's Center for Advanced Imaging that strives to advance our knowledge of space and deliver early warnings from satellites monitoring the sun, weather, planets, and stars. Keller and his team build custom sensor imagers that monitor the weather throughout the day and night, earth-orbiting satellites that look for coronal mass ejections from the sun, sensors that explore planets and the solar system to determine how stars evolve, and more. Equipped with an imager from SRI, the GOES-U, a satellite from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, has successfully launched this week. The satellite will provide continuous, real-time coverage of weather and hazardous environmental conditions and help forecasters predict space weather near Earth that can interfere with satellite electronics, GPS, and radio communications. Join us in remembering the legacy of Lynn Conway, an innovator in computing chip design. Conway's groundbreaking contributions to chip design and her courage in embracing her gender transition have left an incredible mark on both technology and humanity. Conway received an IEEE Computer Pioneer Award for her “foundational contributions” in supercomputing. While at PARC, Conway developed new ways to design computer chips, including a way to pack millions of circuits onto a microchip, known as very large-scale integrated design (VLSI). Unlike their larger AI counterparts, which aim for generalization, small AI focuses on adaptability, customization, and precision. For experts in fields like medicine, finance, or engineering, a specialized solution matters. SRI’s research shows that small AI can outperform larger models when it comes to specialized tasks, and can run in resource-constrained environments. Raymond Perrault, a Distinguished Computer Scientist at SRI’s Artifical Intelligence Center (AIC), is a leader in the field of AI and an advocate for the development of safe and beneficial AI. Some of the fundamental questions he and other experts are asking AI systems include: Are the systems fair? Can they keep data private? Are they secure? “Being able to measure these aspects of new AI systems is essential to policymakers faced with deciding how to regulate them,” said Perrault. SRI’s Claire Christensen and SRI Education investigated YouTube videos intended to teach early literacy and math to kids in pre-K and kindergarten. Their findings show that YouTube videos often miss some of the key characteristics that help children learn while they watch. “Research shows that having a person on screen that feels like a friend is what draws kids in and makes them want to learn,” said Christensen.
