Entry, market structures and welfare Conventionally, entry is thought to enhance welfare by enhancing competition and hence lowering prices and increasing the output. Contrary to the conventional wisdom, working with an n-firm Cournot oligopoly set up and using the trigger strategies, we show that entry may or may not impact welfare. However, entry has the potential to alter the market structure from collusion to Cournot competition, and when it does so, there is a discontinuous rise in welfare. https://lnkd.in/gT_rDUte

❓The Health and Welfare LPA – How important is this? 💁🏻 In the event that any of us lost the mental capacity to make our own decisions, either through illness or accident, we would all want someone we trusted implicitly to make any important decisions on our behalf, not least in respect of our future care. 📃 By creating a Lasting Power of Attorney you can feel confident that any decisions in respect of your health and welfare, if and when the need ever arises, will be made by those you trust the most. https://lnkd.in/dP8yKbZ

Welfare dependency is a complex issue that involves balancing providing a safety net for the less fortunate while fostering a cycle of dependency that undermines individual initiative and economic vitality. The philosophical foundation of this discussion is rooted in justice as fairness, but the integrity of the welfare state depends on the reciprocity of its beneficiaries. The economic perspective of welfare is a double-edged sword, creating perverse incentives that discourage work and enterprise. The psychological dimension of welfare dependency is equally critical, as prolonged dependency erodes self-esteem and the sense of agency, leading to learned helplessness and depression. In Australia, particularly the Northern Territory, the social and economic costs of welfare dependency are palpable. The welfare system has been criticised for creating a culture of dependency, particularly in remote Indigenous communities with high unemployment rates and limited educational and economic opportunities. Addressing welfare dependency requires a nuanced approach, including economic policies focusing on employment and entrepreneurship, psychologically reinforcing the dignity of work and personal responsibility through conditional welfare, and security-focused initiatives addressing crime and social disorder. The challenge for policymakers and society is to roll back a welfare system that doesn't provide a safety net for the needy but encourages dependency. This requires a nuanced understanding of the incentives and behaviours that welfare policies engender and a commitment to creating opportunities for members of society to achieve their potential. #economics #security #dependency #psychology #welfare #helplessness #interventionism
