The response has been wonderful, and I'm so grateful to connect with so many old friends and colleagues in the process of launching this program. I'm only welcoming 10 people in the first wave of sign-ups for this program. I really want to create an experience that's tailored to you and what you want to achieve. The things that I'm hearing in these discovery calls with people who are interested in the program have really helped me reframe how I'm going to deliver the trainings. I hear you about wanting to get started fundraising right away. So right out of the gate, we're going to have a basic training on our approach for permission-based fundraising, and how to do that in an authentic way that feels really right for you and the community you're fundraising with and for. And we're going to match that kickstart to a one-on-one private coaching hour with me so that you can use those two things together to get out and get started fundraising right away. Whether you're a new fundraiser or whether you're an experienced fundraiser, it's going to help you kickstart and/or refine your approach. And then you come into the rest of the training program, as well as the online coaching calls each week, and we can talk about what you're experiencing and refine it and then go out and do some more. When I reflect on my experience being onboarded by ONE of the five boards (shoutout to @orangecountynonprofitprofessionals) I've had the privilege to sit on, a crucial aspect that stands out is the lack of clearly defined expectations and alignment of strengths in our strategic plans. Onboarding and engaging board members is not merely a formality; it's the linchpin for driving an organization toward its goals. In my case, the absence of a cohesive plan with well-defined objectives contributed to a sense of aimlessness within the board. The fundraising strategy, in particular, lacked the structure and specificity needed to motivate the members into meaningful action. Setting expectations is crucial. Each board member should be aware of their roles and responsibilities, ensuring collaboration and communication toward raising revenue. In the realm of fundraising, aligning strengths becomes pivotal. Identifying and leveraging the unique skills and networks of each board member can significantly enhance the effectiveness of fundraising efforts. Without such clarity, members will become unsure of the importance of their contributions or how they fit into the larger organizational strategy. As a tool for self-assessment, I have created a quiz that reflects on the current state of one's fundraising strategy and highlights areas for improvement. It serves as a starting point for initiating conversations within the team and board, fostering a collective commitment to elevating fundraising efforts in 2024. In the realm of major gift & capital campaign fundraising -one thing is for certain... Volunteerism is a key to raising significant revenues, accessing advocates to further the cause has no price but has great value. It can't be done with them. I recently said to a Founder of a wonderful organization that nothing happens without a 'champion'. Often this is a passionate volunteer who freely gives of their time, talent, and treasure. But what about us who are 'paid to raise'? Do we need to give of our time as well? Absolutely. I am a better practitioner because of my unpaid involvements in organizations like Rotary International, AFP Global, among others. Today I wish to let you know about an organization that I volunteer with, that is all volunteer run -no paid staff at all. M4M www.Medals4Mettle.org was started by Dr. Steve Isenberg MD almost 20 years ago. Competitive runners like myself award medals to cancer patients, plus others with life-threatening conditions. Both children and adults who are in the throws of cancer are the recipients of medals to encourage them in their own race. to date, an astounding 70,000 medals have been given. Wow. The medals are awarded to individuals who are "running a much more difficult race," often with an unknown finish line. The mission of M4M is to appreciate the pay-it-forward concept that links the distance runner’s mettle with the mettle it takes to battle life challenges. The donor's acknowledgement of the recipient's mettle encourages the recipient and creates a human connection honouring the grit, courage, and bravery they share. #medals4mettle #doitbecause

In my fundraising career, even in a directorial role, I found myself rarely included in the budget process. That 10% increase from the board often seemed unattainable and unrealistic. The disconnect between setting such goals and the fundraising team's reality was glaring - hello burnout and turnover! Can you relate? As a fundraiser, fostering buy-in and a sense of belonging is vital. Im just going to call this out…Simply handing them a budget without involving them in the process sets the stage for potential failure. Success in fundraising isn't solely about the team's ability; it hinges on their commitment and belief in the set goals. Taking a moment to pause, seek their input, and integrate their perspectives into the budgeting process can make a significant impact on your organization's revenue.
