As I say in the video invite below, I consider parents and other care-providers to be of paramount importance when it comes to developing early functionally bilingual habits in very young learners. As I class them, these care-providers crucially also include home room kindergarten teachers who - unlike professional foreign language teachers but very much like those other care -providers - have got one unique strength. Come along to my session on March 1st to find out what this strength is. And how such a care-provider - if properly mobilised - can really and truly prevent a second (or third) language from ever becoming foreign for a child.

Why are the Japanese so disciplined? One reason might be their public schools. Aside from their dress codes, Japanese schools have no janitors. Students are required to stay after school and spend time every day mopping the floors, clapping erasers, and cleaning toilets. Which means that students are much cleaner in Japan knowing they’ll have to clean up all the messes they make themselves. Japanese schools also rarely hire substitute teachers. If your teacher calls in sick, you are expected to sit quietly at your desk and study. Even in the lunch room students serve the food the lunch ladies prepared, and are expected to eat every last bite. They do not take tests for their first few years in school. The beginning years are used to teach manners and etiquette, and basic knowledge like reading and writing. The million question is what are African kids being taught????

Speaking tasks and language dominance play roles in the manifestation of speech disfluencies in bilingual children. ❗ We have children in reception class who are non-verbal ❗ We have pupils in year 4 who are struggling to access the curriculum ❗ We have children with speech impediments ❗ We have an ECT who needs some tips to support the SEN children in her class These were sentences from a conversation with a SENCO from one school last week who found solutions to all of these problems in The Speech & Language Garden. She's signed her team up to my training package and I've set them some specific things to do first: 👉 For the staff supporting non-verbal children in reception, they will do my Early Years course first to get lots of activity ideas to support the language environment and development in their class.# 👉 Year 4 staff will complete my Memory & Processing skills course first, it will only take them 1.5 hours to finish the course and put some ideas into action. 👉 Staff supporting children with unclear speech will first use my Speech Sounds Screener to identify which sounds they need to work on first, then follow the steps in my Speech Sounds course to resolve those difficulties. 👉 The ECT will start with my SLCN course to help her know what to look out for and choose 5 strategies that she can use in class next week, one per day. Communication and Language (C&L) plays a pivotal role in child development. In my recent article for the Early Years Educator, I explore the impact of COVID-19 and the national lockdowns on this crucial aspect of child development. Furthermore, amidst these challenges lie opportunities for settings to nurture communication skills and foster language development.
