Am just saying, in our request for the professionalization of sports in our country, it is becoming clear that this route that we have taken cannot unfold in isolation from crucial factors such as funding, governance, leadership, infrastructure, and education. We include compelling historical events and analyses throughout our Human-centered leadership courses to help our learners align those events with contemporary events that affect the healthcare experience of people and communities of color. Here is an example of an event we include: The case of Simkins v. Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital is a landmark legal battle that significantly advanced the cause of civil rights in the realm of healthcare. Challenging and ultimately changing the discriminatory practices of hospitals that received federal funding helped pave the way for the desegregation of healthcare facilities in the United States. The formal apology issued by Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital to the Simkins plaintiffs underscores the ongoing process of reconciliation and the importance of acknowledging and addressing past injustices to move forward. Chenchen Zhang, The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation public policy fellow for the 2023-24 term at ASU’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy in partnership with the First Place Global Leadership Institute, has completed her white paper. Titled “Exploring the Influence of Zoning Ordinances on the Development of Neuro-Inclusive Communities,” Chenchen dove into the subject with passion and precision. This visionary white paper highlights the role of zoning in the development of more autism-friendly spaces with the goal of changes in public policy for greater inclusivity for all.
